A firm specialising in recycling and waste management is celebrating a double success at the Derby Telegraph Business Awards - including winning the coveted Company of the Year title. At a ceremony at Derby College’s Roundhouse last night, Ward was the big winner on the evening, securing a brace of awards. The firm was not only victorious in the Employer of the Year category, but also in the hotly-contested Company of the Year category, where it faced tough competition from fellow finalists Gin & Rum Festival and YMD Boon. Ward is a fourth generation family business, which was first established in 1940 as a single site scrap metal dealer. Today, the business operates from five UK sites, including locations in Swadlincote, Ilkeston and Chesterfield. It has grown to become the largest independent metal and waste recycling companies in the East Midlands, employing more than 400 people and operating a fleet of 90 vehicles. The wait is almost over. Tonight all eyes will be on Derby College’s Roundhouse as Derbyshire’s business elite gather for the Derby Telegraph Business Awards 2019. Since this year’s awards were launched in January, everything has been building towards the grand ceremony when the winners of the 16 categories will be revealed. The awards, now in their sixth year, are organised by the Derby Telegraph in partnership with Champions (UK) Plc and backed by headline sponsors ITV, Derby College Group, Thomas International and Stirland Paterson Group. For the past five years, they have received an amazing response from Derbyshire’s business community. The finalists for the 2019 Derby Telegraph Business Awards have been revealed. The nominees represent the cream of the city and county’s businesses and range from innovative small businesses to top-performing large firms. This year, the SME Business of the Year category, sponsored by the University of Derby, will be contested by Bloc Digital, Hackwood Farm and ThreeGuru. Bear, White Peak Distillery and The Gin & Rum Festival are in the running for Start-up Business of the Year, sponsored by Wheeldon Brothers. Up for the HUUB-sponsored Business Entrepreneur of the Year Award are Steve Haseldine (Alerter Group), Leah McLaren (Hotpod Yoga), Amanda Strong (Mercia Image Print) and Rob Carlin (Superior Spas).
