Body camera footage shows fatal police shooting of Jayland Walker
Akron, Ohio — A Black man shot and killed by Akron police officers in a hail of bullets following a vehicle and foot pursuit was unarmed at the time of the shooting, but a shot appeared to have come from the vehicle during the pursuit, and officers said they feared he was preparing to fire when they discharged their weapons, authorities said. Police on Sunday released video that the mayor called "heartbreaking" of the pursuit and shooting of Jayland Walker, 25, while pleading for peace and patience from the community while the state investigation into the shooting continues. Chief Steve Mylett said officers attempted to stop Walker's car for unspecified traffic and equipment violations, but less than a minute into a pursuit the sound of a shot was heard from the car and a transportation department camera captured what appeared to be a muzzle flash coming from the vehicle. Mylett said that changed the nature of the case from "a routine traffic stop to now a public safety issue." … [Read more...] about Body camera footage shows fatal police shooting of Jayland Walker
Stranger Things: Four-week wait for season finale worth it
Netflix The final two episodes of the Duffer brothers show and cult hit is on Netflix now *Graeme Tuckett is a Stuff film and TV reviewer OPINION: A month ago, I wrote a piece about Running Up That Hill - and why Kate Bush's 36-year-old track was number one again - and especially how perfect its use in season 4 of Stranger Things had been. I finished that column with this sentence: "Running Up That Hill in Stranger Things is as good a meeting of soundtrack, action and theme as you could hope for. Also, I still have a few episodes to go. So there's still a chance that Siouxsie and the Banshee's Spellbound could get the same treatment. Or maybe we'll have to wait for season 5." And, as the credits rolled on the final episode of season 4 on Friday night, guess what track came thundering out of my TV speakers? Souxsie and The Banshees’s Spellbound. Not that I'm pretending that it would take a genius to pick that Siouxsie's 1981 hit would be a contender for … [Read more...] about Stranger Things: Four-week wait for season finale worth it
Remembering WWII Medal of Honor recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams
"Hero" is a word used perhaps a little too often these days. Last year, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin talked with the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient from the Second World War: Hershel "Woody" Williams. Williams died Wednesday at the age of 98 . We think you'll agree, he is, indeed, a true American hero. [This story was originally broadcast May 30, 2021] Hershel "Woody" Williams is literally one-of-a-kind. At the age of 97 he is the last living recipient of the Medal of Honor from World War II. But it's the way he's lived all those years since that really sets him apart. "I felt that I owed back more than I could ever possibly give," he told Martin. He grew up on a farm in West Virginia during the Great Depression. "There were 11 born to my family," he said. "Only five of us survived to adulthood." After Pearl Harbor , he tried to enlist in the Marines, but was rejected as too short. When the Marines started taking horrendous casualties … [Read more...] about Remembering WWII Medal of Honor recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams
Sebastian Vettel takes pole 40 years after Gilles Villeneuve triggered Ferrari’s Canadian love affair
Fernando Alonso might think F1 in its current guise is predictable – and it’s hard not to agree at times – but with the top four drivers covered by just 0.232s, and one of them electing to start on the softest tyre compound, Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix holds great promise. Sebastian Vettel ’s pole position was Ferrari ’s first here since Michael Schumacher back in 2001, and gave fans of the legendary team something to cheer on the circuit named in honour of Gilles Villeneuve, one of the Scuderia’s most-loved drivers of all time. Vettel struggled on Friday, damaging his car’s steering when he brushed a wall in first practice, and then failing to find its sweet spot in the second. But he reported a better feel immediately in final practice on Saturday morning, and made the most of that to set the fastest time in the first qualifying session, and then dominate the third with a new unofficial track record of 1m 10.764s. “I was very happy with the last qualifying … [Read more...] about Sebastian Vettel takes pole 40 years after Gilles Villeneuve triggered Ferrari’s Canadian love affair
Parents dipping into children’s savings to pay soaring bills, poll finds
Parents have resorted to dipping into their children ’s savings to afford to pay for the soaring cost of household bills , a poll has found. According to a survey for The Telegraph , Britons are lifting £8.5m a day from their children as the sprialling rate of inflation - which recently hit a 40-year high - continues to top up already sky-high domestic costs. The poll revealed that families had withdrawn almost £300 on average from their children’s savings so far this year. It found a third of the 2,000 people questioned had raided their children’s funds this year and suggested a total of £1.4bn has been withdrawn so far. Almost a quarter said they had extracted the funds to pay for increasingly expensive food shops, one in four said they had done so to help pay for exorbitant energy bills, while 6 per cent said they used their children’s savings to pay for travel. More than a quarter said they had either reduced the amount they were keeping aside for … [Read more...] about Parents dipping into children’s savings to pay soaring bills, poll finds
Everything I know about Dolly Alderton
BBC The TV adaptation of Dolly Adlerton's Everything I Know About Love is a raucous, girl gang, laugh riot. Sex, drugs and lettuce and marmite sandwhiches - as Dolly Alderton tells Kylie Klein Nixon, her memoir-turned-TV series is far from a polished version of her life in London. At first glance, there’s a villain in Everything I Know About Love , the TV adaptation of Dolly Alderton’s 2018 memoir and his name is Nathan. Tall, dark, handsome, and crushingly dull, Nathan (Ryan Brown) has driven a man-sized wedge between Alderton’s fictionalised cipher, Maggie (Emma Appleton), and her similarly fictionalised pal Birdy (Bel Powdy). He also happens to be Australian. "Did you like how much I slagged off Australians?” Alderton asks shortly after jumping on the zoom call from London. “Will the New Zealand audience like that?” You’d better believe it, mate. The Doobie Brothers: “These are the better days”
This story was originally broadcast on "Sunday Morning" October 3, 2021. Considering they've been playing the riff for half a century, maybe it shouldn't be a surprise, but knocking the rust off never sounded so good, as this band tuning up in a rehearsal hall in Burbank. "A band like ours," said Patrick Simmons, "is a little different than a lot of bands, I think." The Doobie Brothers are more than a "little different," selling more than 50 million albums over the last 50 years. Correspondent Jim Axelrod said, "You can count on one hand and maybe have a few fingers left over the number of bands that have had that kind of longevity?" "Right. I think we all feel pretty lucky," said John McFee. While other members have come and gone over the years, Simmons, McFee, Michael McDonald and Tom Johnston – the core four Doobies – are all feeling pretty fortunate to still be playing together, and are not about to let the kind of festering resentments that broke up other bands (and … [Read more...] about The Doobie Brothers: “These are the better days”
