JUST suck it up, folks! Live off the cash you’ve stuffed under the mattress during lockdown. And don’t ask for a pay rise. This seems to be bungling Bank of England boss Andrew Bailey ’s message to 28million households facing the biggest cost-of-living crisis in most people’s lives. Workers should “think and reflect” before asking for bigger wages to pay the soaring bills, suggested the £575,000-a-year governor. Bailey , an unpopular choice for the top job, is blamed by MPs for being “asleep at the wheel” as inflation took off last year to among the highest in the industrialised world. Alongside him in the dock is £330,000-a-year Ofgem chief Jonathan Brearley who failed to protect consumers from 31 high-risk pop-up “energy companies” which have crashed in the last year, adding £2.6BILLION to fuel bills. Now he has imposed a controversial new energy cap denounced yesterday by money-saving expert Martin Lewis as a “f***ing disgrace” . Secrets and Lies in the School Cafeteria
Late on a fall afternoon, a skeleton crew staffed the cafeteria at New Canaan High School, in Connecticut. Custodial workers cleaned up the day’s remains while one of the cooks prepped for the evening’s athletic banquet. To hear more feature stories, see our full list or get the Audm iPhone app. A woman entered quietly through the back door, the one designated for deliveries and employees. She wore a jacket over a loose gown. She clutched something to her chest that appeared to be a bag connected to an IV. “What are you doing here?” one of the workers asked. The woman said nothing. She shuffled to her small office. The door clicked shut. The workers exchanged looks. They’d heard that Marie Wilson had been undergoing treatment for breast cancer. She had every right to stay home and rest. Yet here she was, hobbling into the kitchen near sunset, reporting for duty. There would be more days like this one. Days when Wilson endured life’s worst moments—a grandson’s leukemia … [Read more...] about Secrets and Lies in the School Cafeteria
Severe warning over ‘line of storms’ that will batter Northeast with thunderstorms, hail and tornadoes today
A SEVERE warning has been issued over a "line of storms" that will batter the Northeast with thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes today. The Northeast is expected to see potentially threatening winds, sizable hale, and a few tornadoes on Monday, May 16, 2022. The roaring thunderstorms will begin in the afternoon and continue throughout the early evening, according to The Weather Channel . As the thunderstorms make their way across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions of the US, an "intensifying low-pressure system along a cold front" will move across the Eastern Seaboard. The system will prompt thunderstorms to strengthen while creating a squall line, which is described by the National Weather Service (NWS) as "a linearly-oriented zone of thunderstorms." Damaging straight-line winds could be seen within the squall line across northern Virginia, along with sections of New York and Pennsylvania. The new cap of £693 a year has seen some people's bills nearly double as the Government allows firms to recoup cash and avoid meeting the fate more than a dozen others did in 2021. Tories vote down windfall tax that could save you £600
Tory MPs have been accused of siding with ‘profiteering oil and gas companies’ after voting down a windfall tax that Labour says could save struggling families £600 this year. The opposition party tabled an amendment to the Queen’s Speech backing a one-off levy on North Sea firms to help people who have been plunged into poverty amid the cost of living crisis. But MPs rejected the move by 310 votes to 248. Following the vote, Shaddow climate change minister Ed Miliband said: ‘Every Conservative MP who voted against the windfall tax tonight has condemned millions of families to misery and anxiety as they struggle to pay their energy bills. ‘Tonight a message has been sent by the government that they will do everything they can to protect the oil and gas companies, and refuse to act to protect families; it says everything you need to know about where the Tories stand. ‘This is a government that will never put working people first, will never stand up to the vested … [Read more...] about Tories vote down windfall tax that could save you £600

Record wage growth sparks inflation fears as minister expresses ‘surprise’ at Bailey food warning
Andrew Bailey has raised ministers' eyebrows for warning of "apocalyptic" food shortages as record wage growth raises fears that a dangerous inflationary spiral is taking hold in the economy. Brandon Lewis, the Northern Ireland Secretary, expressed “surprise” at the Bank of England Governor's comments about rising costs caused by the war in Ukraine blocking exports of wheat and cooking oils. “I was surprised to see that particular turn of phrase, I have to say,” Mr Lewis told BBC Breakfast. “But the Bank of England is independent, they will have their view of their assessment, their economic view of where things are and where things are going.” It came as new data from the Office for National Statistics showed pay packets jumped almost 10pc in March, helping workers keep up with the cost of living, but also risking making inflation worse. In February, Mr Bailey urged workers not to ask for a big pay rise this year , warning that "moderation" of wage rises was needed to … [Read more...] about Record wage growth sparks inflation fears as minister expresses ‘surprise’ at Bailey food warning
