If I could be anywhere writing about anything, right now, I'd be lost in Kiev. I used to read about certain countries in Europe after they threw bananas at some black soccer player, and say to myself, "I'll never go there." But I am a little older now, and I am more confirmed in the fact of this one-shot life. And knowing that this is not a dress rehearsal, and knowing, too, that questions are burning in me, and feeling that my whole purpose here is to observe, I simply don't much care anymore. I am past the age where one can afford to sit around waiting for the world to autoliberate from its various hatreds. And I have had my hatreds too. Like most humans. I began this blue period thinking mostly of justice for my people. And having explored that subject, I came to wonder how other societies handled their national crimes. And so we've spent the past few months thinking of some of the most horrifying wrongs of the 20th century, and in those wrongs I have seen so much of myself. It … [Read more...] about Ukraine Has Not Yet Died

Britain is in crisis because of the arrogance and delusions of the lockdown fanatics
What the hell did you think would happen? For the better part of two years, we paid people to stay home , and covered the cost by printing money. In other words, for two years, the amount of goods and services being produced fell, while the amount of money in circulation rose. You don’t need a degree in economics to know that more money chasing fewer products means inflation. Most of us grasp the concept of a postponed reckoning. If you took two years off work, and maintained your income by borrowing, you’d be a lot worse off. We all understand that with reference to our own lives. So why do we struggle to extend the same reasoning to our nation’s finances? Perhaps because it is human to prefer sweet falsehoods to bitter truths. It would be lovely if there really were a way to get back to growth and stable money without significant cuts. And, politics being politics, various fools and opportunists are now stepping forward to claim that this can somehow be done. First, there are … [Read more...] about Britain is in crisis because of the arrogance and delusions of the lockdown fanatics
Ukraine’s Long-Smoldering War for Independence
On any given night in Kiev, you can pass the time in one of the city’s popular new watering holes, descend into the basement of the old cinema to enter a Brooklyn-style speakeasy, or sip a $10 cocktail on the rooftop of a trendy music hall, where every piece of furniture in the bar appears to be up for sale. There’s an imitation Nobu , and a smattering of restaurants with names like “Reef” and “Simple” that cater to the international moneyed class. At these establishments, you’ll overhear patrons speaking in fluent English—usually Americans or Brits, likely part of the small army of Western consultants and grant-makers that have descended upon Ukraine since 2014’s Maidan Revolution and the subsequent Russian invasion. As these European spaces have sprung up, Ukraine’s old Russian place names have begun to disappear, swept away by the surge of nationalism that accompanied the events of 2014, which also paved the way for a concerted decommunization campaign to rid the nation of its … [Read more...] about Ukraine’s Long-Smoldering War for Independence
Why the Mar-a-Lago Documents Matter, Whatever’s in Them
French President Emmanuel Macron has to be wondering why former President Donald Trump retained, of all things, information about him. I certainly am; aren’t you? According to an inventory of what the FBI took from Mar-a-Lago during last week’s search and recovery of materials from Trump’s home, the French dossier , so to speak, stood out. Why Macron? Lest we forget, France is a friend and partner to the U.S., most notably in the unified response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. For now, we’re stuck with a maddening uncertainty about the true stakes of the matter: If Trump was holding onto personal information—perhaps mere tittle-tattle—about the leader of an allied nation, as well, reportedly, as top-secret intelligence about nuclear capabilities , then why? We swing between gossip and fear, the scurrilous and the deadly serious, The Real Housewives and The Walking Dead . We parse the judicial warrant, including an Espionage Act charge, for clues. The temptation to indulge … [Read more...] about Why the Mar-a-Lago Documents Matter, Whatever’s in Them
