MILLIONS of EE and Virgin Media customers have been given refunds after the providers were fined a collective £13.3million for overcharging customers. Telecoms regulator Ofcom says both providers broke consumer protection rules and as such, EE has been fined £6.3million and Virgin Media has been fined £7million. Phone and broadband companies can charge customers who decide to cancel their contracts within the minimum term. But they must make these charges clear, and they cannot charge excessive fees as this might put customers off of switching. Gaucho Rasmussen, Ofcom’s director of investigations and enforcement, said: “EE and Virgin Media broke our rules by overcharging people who ended their contracts early. "Those people were left out of pocket, and the charges amounted to millions of pounds. “That is unacceptable. These fines send a clear message to all phone and broadband firms that they must play by the rules, in the interests of their … [Read more...] about EE and Virgin Media fined £13.3million for overcharging customers – are you due a refund?

Broadband customers are being hit by price hikes of up to 82% when their contracts come to an end - and many households aren't even are of it. People on 'standard' ADSL contracts face steep rises as soon as their contracts expire in an 'awareness penalty', according to research by uSwitch.com . The average broadband contract jumps by an average of £152 a year - or almost £13 a month - the day after their fixed terms end. Similarly, customers on faster fibre services face a 53% hike in their monthly payments - which leaves them paying £158 more a year than they did when they were in contract. The price consumers pay for broadband contracts often jumps as soon as their initial term ends, typically after 12 to 18 months. At the moment, providers have no obligation to warn customers when their contracts are coming to an end, which leaves them open to an ‘awareness penalty’ until they realise that cheaper - and often faster - services are available to them. Some Sky customers will face a price rise on April 1 in the latest twist in a subscription merry-go-round. The broadcaster has confirmed a rise in costs just a month after customers were given an extra 80 channels for no extra fee. The hikes come into force on Easter Sunday when viewers will pay an extra £30 a year. But some customers will be exempt from the increase. Those on Sky Entertainment - the package that replaced the original bundle of channels - will not have to pay the extra. Sky UK chief executive Stephen van Rooyen told Mirror Money the rise is the provider’s first increase in two years - factoring out line rental and legacy price changes last year. In a statement, Mr Rooyen said: “Not all customers will see their bills increase with many Sky products remaining at their current price and, for some products, this will be the first increase in two years. “We continue to invest in content, products and services that our customers love, offering both new … [Read more...] about Sky TV bills to rise on April 1
