MILLIONS of BT customers face price hikes for the second time this year as the provider pushes up the cost of landline, broadband and TV sport packages. The fresh waves of hikes will come into effect from September 16 2018. It means that the cost of the Superfast Fibre Plus package will go up by 40 per cent, from £20.50 a month to £28.75. Landline rental will also go up from £18.99 to £19.99 a month, or from £56.97 to £59.97 if you pay quarterly. Standard broadband prices including line rental will increase by £2.50 a month, while landline customers will have to pay an extra 2p a minute for calls and another 1p a minute for calls from a mobile. Customers making international calls will have to fork out another 5p per minute. BT Sport has won the rights to a further 20 Premier League football matches for three years from the start of the 2019-20 season. The network had already secured 32 games earlier in the year, taking its total number of games to 52, up from 42 under its previous contract. By comparison, Sky will own the rights to 128 games through to 2022, which will include Saturday evening fixtures. For the first time, Amazon will become the first internet streaming service to show live Premier League football, after the American giant shattered the long-standing duopoly on Premier League rights held by Sky and BT. It has secured one of two packages of live action from 2019 to 2022, and will show an entire round of midweek games and all 10 matches on Boxing Day. We recently moved to a house in the Scottish Highlands. Knowing that broadband was likely to be an issue we were careful to buy a property with an existing internet connection. However, after moving in, BT could only connect our phone line. After a great deal of to-ing and fro-ing, it seems that our home’s broadband line had been given to someone else. We have been told that there is no room at the exchange to connect our house – and no possible date when this will change. It seems incredible that in this day and age this could be happening, but it is. We are desperate. UK households could save an average of £322 a year by switching to a better broadband deal, yet 42% have never changed provider, according to figures. A Cable.co.uk report has revealed that almost half of billpayers have not shopped around for a more competitive offer in the past five years. A worrying 35% have switched during this period, but just once, potentially losing them thousands of pounds. Nevertheless, when asked if they would ditch their current broadband provider for extra cash, nearly three-quarters (74%) said 'yes'.
