BRITISH staycations are in peril because of soaring inflation with the cost of camping and BBQs rocketing. With the nation set to bake, summer grub prices rocket, with bangers up 13 per cent, burgers now eight per cent more, and cheddar costing 15 per cent extra. Ketchup has rocketed by 13 per cent while Mayo has soared by 23 per cent. Camping hols have also gone up a whopping 23 per cent. Labour made the dire warning today (TUES) after analysing official inflation stats from the Office of National Statistics. Labour’s Shadow Tourism Minister Jeff Smith said: “The Conservative cost of living crisis is hitting families in the pocket; with the cost of camping trips and holiday parks soaring as a result of economic mismanagement. “Instead of a summer of BBQ fun, families are cutting back as the pound in their pocket is worth less. Monday morning news briefing: ‘Real sprint’ to avoid NHS crisis
Britain is braced for another heatwave this week, but the thoughts of health bosses are firmly on colder weather. The new Health Secretary today warns that the NHS is facing a winter emergency and it will be "too late" to avert a crisis if action is delayed until a new prime minister is in post. In his first interview since taking up the job , Steve Barclay said hospitals face "very serious challenges coming down the track in the autumn". He said his department was in a "real sprint to get ready for September" and that decisions, including on hiring more staff from overseas, could not wait for a new party leader. Political correspondent Nick Gutteridge explains how the NHS is facing threats on three fronts . Mr Barclay is known as one of Boris Johnson's most loyal lieutenants and was one of those who hunkered down with him in No 10 as the walls closed in. Tellingly, he will not rule out the most extraordinary of political comebacks for the man who will soon no longer … [Read more...] about Monday morning news briefing: ‘Real sprint’ to avoid NHS crisis
BA extends sales ban on Heathrow short-haul tickets
Published 6 days ago comments Comments Share close Share page Copy link About sharing British Airways has suspended ticket sales for short-haul flights from Heathrow Airport for a further week until 15 August. On Monday, the airline said it had stopped selling the tickets until 8 August, but now it has gone a step further. The move is due to the cap on daily passenger numbers that the UK's biggest airport has imposed over the summer. The suspension will affect BA's flights to domestic and European destinations. Thousands of air travellers have been hit by disruption in recent months, including last-minute cancellations, which have been caused largely by staff shortages. Don’t let the cheap French property dream fool you – it’s a lot harder than it seems
I wonder if you’re on holiday in France right now , or are planning to be at some point this summer? If you are, perhaps you do what I always used to do before I lived here, which is, spend a lot of time gazing in estate agents’ windows and wondering, “What if?” (My husband insists one of the best things about living here now is that I no longer contrive to make any walk go past every single estate agent in town, scooping up brochures.) When I speak to many British visitors about their fantasy property shopping habit, the first thing many say is: “Isn’t it amazing what you can get for your money?” Well, yes and no. Sometimes our English friends and acquaintances admire our house and suggest how lucky we must have been to land such a bargain. I smile slightly through gritted teeth, head non-committedly on one side, and silently remind myself it’s vulgar to talk about money with anyone who isn’t your bank manager or your accountant. Houses in busy villages, with views of the … [Read more...] about Don’t let the cheap French property dream fool you – it’s a lot harder than it seems
