The report, by consultants Grant Thornton, is part of a major push-back against negative publicity for the sector since Apple pulled its plans for a massive data centre cluster in Athenry after objections sparked a drawn-out planning battle. Critics argue that the huge facilities create relatively few jobs and use huge amounts of electricity. But the new report found 5,700 construction and operational jobs are supported by data centres here each year. Total direct and indirect expenditure on Irish data centres by companies such as Facebook, Google and Amazon is estimated at €7.13bn since 2010, said the report. The report found that "many Irish data centre operators see the physical location of their data centre operations as closely strategically linked to their overall activity and operations in Ireland." This has seen jobs at companies with large Irish data centres doubling to almost 10,000 since 2010, it said. featured newsJune 6, 2018 at 11:48 amMicrosoft has announced that it has sunk a computer data centre in the sea off Orkney, in a pioneering move which has seen the islands dubbed as the one of the most exciting places in tech. The deployment is phase two of Microsoft’s Project Natick. Data centres are the backbone of the internet and as demand for data centre resources across the computing industry grows exponentially, industry need a solution to data storage that provides both the speed people expect and solutions that are more environmentally sustainable. Microsoft’s Project Natick could herald a new wave of data centres that can be deployed rapidly and inexpensively while increasing data speeds along coastal regions, say the company. In Orkney what has been described as a more eco-friendly data centre has been lowered into the water at the EMEC Billia Croo test site. The shipping-container-sized prototype, which will be left in the sea for a set period of time before … [Read more...] about Underwater data centre installed on the seabed off Orkney

Inside the Migsolv data centre on the Bowthorpe Industrial Estate in Norwich. Picture: Paul Harrison It could create a boon for companies like Future50 member Migsolv – which is seeing a fast rate of growth as more people seek a “physical” solution to data storage. David Manning, who formerly worked in operations at the Norwich-based firm, took over as managing director in 2016 to help the board realise its vision of making Migsolv the leading data centre in the East of England. He estimates the company is currently seeing growth of 40% year-on-year as it explores opportunities in new industries. It has recently taken a foray into the cryptocurrency world – which has resulted in its centre … [Read more...] about Could fears over data safety herald a new era for data centres like Migsolv?
