Driving through County Donegal, somewhere south of Ballybofey, we turned left on to a narrow lane. After a few miles we came to an old stone bridge over a tumbling stream. It was wide open country, with forestry plantations and mountains in the background, but a foreground of pure Irish bog. No one in sight; no sound but the wind. And none of the paraphernalia of a border. The sharp-bend sign on the far side was British-style black-and-white rather than Irish black-and-amber. And on the other side was an un-British 80kmph speed limit sign. The only other indicator was the phone flipping from network to network. I stood alone on the bridge: king of the wild frontier. This being Ireland – one way or another – the first passing driver stopped to say hello. Her name was Sarah Conaghan. She was in the holiday cottage business and as local as they come. But round here that is not a simple proposition: she lives in Donegal, in the Republic, but grew up in Tyrone, where we now … [Read more...] about ConsumerBusinessSpotlightConsumerBusinessSpotlightConsumerBusinessSpotlightConsumerBusinessSpotlightConsumerBusinessSpotlightA view from the border: Ireland on the brink of Brexit

Mount Etna volcano erupts in Sicily sending plumes of ash and spewing lava 500ft in air in spectacular pictures
MOUNT Etna has roared back into life - sending plumes of ash and spewing lava 500ft in the air above Sicily. The volcano - one of the most active and destructive in the world - initially "re-awoke" in late July but didn't fully spring into action until Thursday evening. Chunks of flaming molten rock shot as high as 500ft (150metres) in a constant fashion, according to Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology (INGV). On Friday, INGV said the action was continuing, feeding ash plumes several hundred feet into the air above the crater. No evacuations of towns on the slopes of Etna, on the east coast of the Italian island, were reported. Europe's tallest active volcano is also a popular destination for hikers on the Mediterranean island. Earlier this year, a team of British experts discovered the giant volcano is edging closer to the Mediterranean Sea by 14mm every year which could result in collapse. Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in … [Read more...] about Mount Etna volcano erupts in Sicily sending plumes of ash and spewing lava 500ft in air in spectacular pictures

Magaluf pest behind vile Facebook ‘Maga Walk of Shame’ is a DJ and former squaddie who brags he loves to break the rules
THE pest behind the infamous Maga Walk of Shame website is a shameless former squaddie who brags he loves to play by his own rules. David King is a cocky DJ from Sutton Coldfield who goes by the stage name 'He Who Dares' and performs in clubs and venues across Magaluf - while his website has been slammed as offensive and degrading to women. King was once a Lance Corporal in the British Army, serving with The Queens Royal Hussars before moving into a career in public relations and then music. Up until last summer, the wannabe superstar DJ had a regular Wednesday night slot playing at the Oculta as well as performing at the trendy BH Mallorca hotel. However, he is now best known for his outrageous Facebook page which sets out to shame young Brits for their sexual exploits in the booze-fuelled island resort. The vile web page - which has 10,000 dedicated followers - has been roundly criticised for targeting tourists who are just out to have a good time. The first Walk of Shame … [Read more...] about Magaluf pest behind vile Facebook ‘Maga Walk of Shame’ is a DJ and former squaddie who brags he loves to break the rules
Past Times: 125 years of The Hinckley Times: 1940s
1940 25th June Bombs were dropped over the Midlands. The censor at the time would not allow newspapers to print the name of places where events took place, but now we know where the bombs were dropped on our area. One fell in a field near the home of Mr R. J. Palmer, a well-known rugby football player, of Wykin Fields Farm. A second bomb dropped within a dozen yards of the house. It made a crater in the rose garden, uprooting trees and blew a fence flat at the end of the tennis court. Miraculously no damage was done to the house and the occupants escaped injury. Just 300 yards away bombs dropped in the garden of a hosiery manufacturer, Mr R. Bedford. Other bombs fell some distance away in Wykin and Stoke Golding, falling in fields. May With the retreat to Dunkirk and evacuation from the Port, The Hinckley Times began to report the names of Hinckley and District servicemen who had been killed or reported missing. This was to continue for the next five years, from other areas of fighting … [Read more...] about Past Times: 125 years of The Hinckley Times: 1940s
