British Airways passengers can now buy £33 rapid Covid tests to take abroad

· March 4, 2021 ·

British Airways passengers can now buy a discounted Covid-19 test kit to take abroad, which they can use ahead of their return to the UK. Under the current UK travel rules, anyone arriving in the UK will need to show proof of a negative Covid test taken within 72 hours of departure - which leaves travellers having to find somewhere abroad to get a test. However, British Airways is offering discounted antigen kits from Qured for £33, which passengers can buy before they travel. Passengers can order the kits to their UK address, which are designed to be portable so passengers can take them abroad. They can then schedule a video call with one of Qured's professional health advisors for when it's time to administer the test, so that they can be guided through the process and check that it's done correctly. Qured says that the verified results can be available after 20 minutes, and customers with a negative test will be able to download a 'fit to fly' certificate for their … [Read more...] about British Airways passengers can now buy £33 rapid Covid tests to take abroad

COVID-19: Italy and EU block Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine shipment to Australia as shortages row escalates

· March 4, 2021 ·

Italy and the European Commission have blocked a shipment of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine destined for Australia. The British-Swedish drug manufacturer had failed to meet its EU contract commitments so the Italian government refused its request to export 250,000 doses from its Anagni plant near Rome, according to the Reuters news agency. Italy made the request and it was signed off by the European Commission under a new export control system that came into law on 30 January. This is the first time it has been used by a member state. It is understood the doses will now be redistributed within the EU, where about 8% of the population has been vaccinated, compared with more than 30% in the UK. Trainer Gordon Elliott was this week banned from running horses in Britain in response to a shocking viral photo. The British Horseracing Authority said Elliott cannot run horses here while an investigation by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) is ongoing. A BHA spokesperson said: "The decision to refuse to allow horses trained by Mr Elliott to run in Britain is therefore an interim decision which the BHA regards as proportionate in these circumstances. "In an earlier statement, the BHA said it was appalled by the image which undermined its values of respecting and caring for horses." Elliott's record at the Cheltenham Festival He has 32 winners to his name at the meeting and was crowned top trainer in 2017 and 2018. AstraZeneca’s jab has had a bumpy rollout in the EU – but how did it play out?

· March 4, 2021 ·

The EU's vaccination drive has been a bumpy ride - but its rollout of the Oxford/AstraZeneca jab has been especially so. In November, the European Commission celebrated its plan for a common approach, heralding the creation of a "health union" along with its deal to purchase at least 300 million doses from the British-Swedish drugmaker. This deal came with the option of purchasing another 100 million doses for its 450 million citizens. Four months later, however, and the bloc's programme has been beset with shortages and delays , and has prompted a very public and very bitter row with the pharmaceutical company. It then almost resulted in a nuclear option - triggering Article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol, before peaking again on Thursday when the commission blocked a shipment of vaccines bound for Australia.
