Simpson’s 1988 best-seller – detailing a near fatal climbing expedition in the Peruvian Andes three years earlier – relayed one of the most remarkable stories of endurance and survival in climbing history. Supplied A story about a travelling freak show put on display for baying Victorian audiences will be performed in Bristol this month. The Elephant Man will be at Bristol Old Vic in King Street at various times from June 26 to July 7. The Elephant Man was a cruel nickname given to one person with a disfigurement in the 19th century. The main role of Joseph Merrick, who comes across a London surgeon faced with a moral dilemma – to help or use him to further his scientific career – will be played by disabled actor Jamie Beddard. Jamie will work alongside 2018 graduates from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He made a name for himself on one of the biggest stages of British TV - Coronation Street - but away from the limelight actor Peter Baldwin was a man whose lifelong passion was toy theatres.Peter, who died aged 82 in 2015, will be best remembered for playing the role of Derek Wilton for more than 20 years in the world’s longest running soap opera. He wooed his screen wife Mavis Riley (Thelma Barlow) for many years and eventually the pair married.But there was one passion Mavis could never compete with – Peter’s love for juvenalia, primarily toy theatres.He adored them, he collected them and he even had a shop in London’s Covent Garden selling them.
