THERESA May is currently struggling to find a way out of the current Brexit mess with MPs rejecting three times the withdrawal agreement - one option could be to stay in the single market. The most recent leave date of April 12 is fast approaching and the Prime Minister is running out of options. What is the EU single market? The European Union's single market is a trade agreement between all EU member states which allows free movement of goods, services, capital and people from one EU member country to another. This is why there is no limit on the number of EU migrants who can come to the UK or the number of Brits who can live in Spain, for example. It encompasses the EU's 28 member states as well as the exceptions Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Will the UK leave the single market after Brexit? Despite statements from May in the past this is now not entirely sure as she has, so far, been unable to win a majority in Parliament for the withdrawal agreement. Some … [Read more...] about What is the EU single market, will the UK leave it after Brexit and what will Theresa May’s Brexit policy mean for it?

0 Have your say The UK will pay for the current lack of genuine leadership, writes Bill Jamieson, with uncertainty over Brexit and the threat of a delay already damaging the economy. What happens when a Prime Minister can no longer govern, and the Government itself is faced with paralysis? In the early 20th century, David Lloyd George faced just such a predicament. The country’s miners had gone on strike, other unions were preparing to join in. The country faced a national breakdown within days, with industry at a standstill and essential fuel and food supplies disrupted.Offers to improve pay and conditions had been rejected and talks were at a standstill. Lloyd George had no other cards left to play – other than the ultimate Black Ace. He turned to the miners’ leaders across the Cabinet table: “When an indomitable force arises in the state that is more powerful than the state”, he declared, “and can halt the functioning of the … [Read more...] about Top Scots businessman tells me Theresa May ‘has destroyed UK’ – Bill Jamieson
London, United Kingdom - A flurry of defections by MPs from the UK's two main political parties has raised the prospect of a realignment in British politics as the clock ticks towards the deadline for the country to leave the European Union. The breakaway "Independent Group" created by 11 MPs from both the opposition Labour and ruling Conservative parties threatens to upend the normal rules of politics as divisions over Brexit deepen. Nonetheless, the development does not change the parliamentary arithmetic - and Brexit remains on schedule to take place on March 29 unless MPs force Prime Minister Theresa May to delay. Tim Bale, professor of politics at Queen Mary University London, told Al Jazeera: "These resignations are a crack in the dam and we might see a trickle to begin with, but then again dams can burst quite quickly. "We know both parties are polarised, there is a gap among voters, neither party seems particularly competent and neither is seen as having the national … [Read more...] about With 37 days until Brexit, why are UK politicians defecting?
Could Brexit be about to break the mould of British politics? There are certainly many who would like it to be so. While some way away from registering a name and logo with the Electoral Commission, the establishment of a London office for the Trumpite Turning Point group is one sign that the radical neo-Thatcherite hard-Brexit wing of the Conservative Party is feeling increasingly attracted to a more exclusive, ideologically pure kind of political club. Jacob Rees-Mogg, inevitably, is supporting it. Turning Point UK, which, given its name, presumably wishes to have a revolutionary edge to its counter-revolutionary activities, is planning to visit British universities, which its leaders say will cause a “disruption in socialist ideology”. TORY MPs across the Brexit divide have given their backing to the so-called Malthouse Compromise. It would mean extending the transition period from the end of 2020 to December 2021 but with the UK following EU rules and paying an extra £10billion into Brussels coffers. It would also mean replacing the Irish backstop with technological solutions while leaving the option open of exiting the EU on World Trade Organisation rules – if a free-trade deal has not been struck. The idea was named after housing minister Kit Malthouse, who brought the two sides together in secret. Here, leading Conservative Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg offers his view: THE EU has taken an almost religious approach to Britain’s latest move towards securing a Brexit deal. The compromise put forward by my fellow MP Kit Malthouse has been immediately dismissed and any prospect of further negotiation turned away. The mighty EU has spoken and will not be gainsaid. In negotiating the compromise, both … [Read more...] about Delaying Brexit will wreck any faith in our politicians and show contempt for voters
