More info Mr Johnson is hoping to secure a Brexit deal before the EU Summit begins tomorrow, so he can avoid evoking the Benn Act and asking the EU for another extension. Negotiations hang on the edge of a knife – but Britain's future relationship with Brussels has been up for debate since former Prime Minister Theresa May triggered Article 50 – the 250-word clause in the 2007 Lisbon Treaty explaining how an EU country can leave the union unilaterally – in March 2017. It states that the departing nation must notify the European Council of its intention, negotiate a deal on its withdrawal and then establish a legal foundation which the future … [Read more...] about Article 50 written for REMAINERS? Sir Nick Clegg returns to London in latest Meta move
Sir Nick Clegg is to join a string of senior Facebook executives moving to London after four years in Silicon Valley, despite predicting that an “economically insecure” Britain would hemorrhage tech businesses in the wake of Brexit. The former Liberal Democrat deputy prime minister, 55, who is president of global affairs at Facebook's parent company Meta, is to divide his time between homes in London and California after his return to Britain. Sir Nick – who left the UK to work for Facebook's billionaire founder Mark Zuckerberg after losing his seat as an MP – has made no secret of his longing to leave California, saying last year that his "heart belongs massively 5,000 miles away". However, the decision is nonetheless likely to raise eyebrows given his history of outspoken warnings about the damage that Brexit would do to UK plc – particularly in the industry in which he is now employed. In a 2017 interview, he said: "Pretty much everyone I speak to in the tech sector … [Read more...] about Sir Nick Clegg returns to London in latest Meta move
Liz Truss’s tax cuts could trigger a wave of investment into the UK, says L&G chief
Liz Truss’s plans to slash taxes could trigger a wave of investment into the UK, the boss of Legal & General has said. Nigel Wilson, the influential City grandee and chief executive of the UK’s biggest pensions manager, said that cutting taxes on businesses could boost the attractiveness of Britain as a destination for international investors. Attracting overseas money could soften the blow as the economy heads into a recession, Mr Wilson said. "Reducing the tax burden will be seen by international investors [as a sign] that the country is open for business,” he said. It comes as Ms Truss and former chancellor Rishi Sunak, the two candidates vying to replace Boris Johnson as prime minister, continue to trade blows about whether immediate tax cuts would boost economic growth or stoke inflation. Ms Truss is in favour of rapidly cutting taxes in the hope it will stimulate economic activity, while Mr Sunak argues that slashing taxes now will only serve to prolong the … [Read more...] about Liz Truss’s tax cuts could trigger a wave of investment into the UK, says L&G chief
Greedy Bercow never could resist a perk
During his unhappily long stint as Speaker of the House, John Bercow took very public pride in being a reformer. He cast aside the formal regalia which had for centuries helped to elevate previous holders of his post above the partisan fray of the Commons – and their commitment to studious neutrality with them. Yet even back then, there were very obvious limits to Bercow’s reforming zeal. A radical on the subject of his responsibilities, he took a staunchly conservative approach to his privileges. He famously clashed with at least one MP, for example, over his expectation that they spring aside for him as he and his entourage processed through the corridors of Westminster – a strange demand for someone supposedly committed to a more modern and egalitarian approach to his role. Likewise, his bold campaign against the Speaker’s traditional aversion to the spotlight was not matched by any bid to reform access to perks and freebies. It has been the same story since he finally … [Read more...] about Greedy Bercow never could resist a perk
