Remember when Jo Swinson was going to win a majority? It was just a few short weeks ago that the Lib Dem leader was all over TV managing to keep a straight face while attempting to brazenly mislead the public, a skill she presumably perfected in the coalition government. If recent polls are anything to go by, she now looks more likely to win a Bafta for that performance than she does to make substantial electoral gains. No surprise then that the party has changed tack, instead pitching itself as the only way to prevent a Tory majority and block a hard Brexit. But do the Lib Dems mean it, or would a whiff of power see them gleefully sell those who might consider lending them their support down the river, in much the same way they did students in 2010? While Swinson has ostensibly ruled out going into a coalition with either of the main parties, she hasn’t ruled out a more informal “confidence and supply” arrangement, such as that the Tories have enjoyed with the DUP. … [Read more...] about Are the Lib Dems about to do another deal with the Tories?
Brexit deal deal
EMMANUEL Macron has said a Brexit deal can be signed off tomorrow as Boris Johnson told MPs the "summit" is near. The French President raised hopes earlier of getting an agreement over the line as negotiations go down to the wire but a government source has revealed that no deal would be finalised tonight. Govt source says no Brexit deal tonight, because of unresolved issues with both the DUP and EU: "Everyone will be working into the night but there won’t be a deal this evening".— Tom Newton Dunn (@tnewtondunn) October 16, 2019 The source announced that there were still unresolved issues with both the DUP and the EU and said that "everyone will be working into the night but there will be no deal this evening." The French President said earlier today: "I want to believe an agreement is being finalised and that we will be able to endorse it tomorrow." And German Chancellor Angela Merkel said this evening: "The news we are getting from Brussels could be worse". BRUSSELS bosses have warned that Britain could be locked into the EU until 2020 as they finalise plans for a Brexit deal. Sources in the bloc said a breakthrough is on the cards - but the technical details may not be finalised until next year, paving the way for a THIRD extension. The move could wreck BoJo's "do or die" promise to have Britain out by October 31st. According to The Times, Johnson's allies said that the EU nations were split over suggestions of a further delay but said there was a "strong desire among powerful forces to get this sorted". Michel Barnier last night said it was "still possible" to do a deal this week but said now was the time to thrash out a legal text to seal it. Talks went on until midnight for the second day in a row.The tired-looking EU negotiator Michel Barnier raised hopes after weeks of pessimism in Brussels. Ramping up the pressure, the Frenchman told EU ministers that a draft legal text was needed by midnight. Mr Barnier said: "Let me add that it … [Read more...] about Britain might not leave EU until 2020 even if Boris Johnson gets a deal, Brussels warns
Sajid Javid has said he has no doubt that the Conservatives, if returned to power, will agree and finalise “a very ambitious, deep and comprehensive” trade deal with the EU by the end of next year. The language is reminiscent of the Theresa May era and appears to suggest the Conservatives have pivoted away from Boris Johnson’s promise weeks ago of a “super Canada-plus” deal and are now back to close alignment with the EU – something Eurosceptics are vehemently against. Can a comprehensive deal be done by the end of 2020? The majority of commentators think this is highly unlikely, but the answer depends on the definition of a trade deal. Sam Lowe, a senior research fellow at the Centre for European Reform, is one who believes it is possible. “The single biggest underpriced thing in this whole debate about Brexit is that Johnson and the EU might actually get a trade deal done by 31 December 2020,” he said. “It’s not that I am … [Read more...] about Can a comprehensive Brexit deal be done by the end of 2020?
brexit countdown_bg Created with Sketch. Boris Johnson and his girlfriend Carrie Symonds were seen leaving Balmoral yesterday hours after he was warned he could go to prison if he refuses to delay Brexit. The former Director of Public Prosecutions, Lord MacDonald, 66, said on Saturday that should Mr Johnson decide to ignore a bill which prevents a No Deal exit he could face prosecution. This is because, should Mr Johnson ignore the bill, he could be found in contempt of court. Asked if it would be 'an extreme outcome', Lord MacDonald said 'it is by convention that if you are found guilty of defying a court order then you are jailed'. A rebel anti-No Deal law is expected to receive Royal Assent on Monday after peers agreed to its passage on Friday. It will require the PM to seek a Brexit delay beyond October 31 if Britain and Brussels have not struck an agreement in the run up to Halloween. Mr Johnson had earlier said he would not entertain seeking … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson and girlfriend Carrie Symonds are seen leaving Balmoral hours after he was warned he could go to PRISON if he carries through with his threat to ignore the law and refuse to delay Brexit
