A 29-year-old from Glasgow was shocked to discover her chronic knee pain was actually a rare cancer . Rebekah Laverty suffered with debilitating knee trouble for years and was told in 2019 that she was suffering from an inflammatory condition called bursitis, which causes painful swelling. However, after years of unsuccessful treatments an MRI finally revealed she actually had a 13cm cancerous tumour above her right knee. ‘The type of cancer I have is usually found in the arms, legs or near joints such as the wrist or ankle but it’s so rare I’ve been told a GP will maybe see one case in their whole career – so mine wasn’t picked up,’ she explains. ‘My referrals were also delayed due to Covid. It took until September 2021 for me to be referred for an MRI and get some answers. ‘I received the news that I had this cancer at an appointment that I went to on my own. By then I’d been to countless appointments with no answers so I had no faith that this time would be any … [Read more...] about Woman chooses to have leg amputated after knee pain turns out to be rare cancer

Redditch firm defends sale of human breast milk
Published 26 August 2021 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A private company has defended selling breast milk for profit and said its products can help premature and ill babies. NeoKare Nutrition, based in Redditch, Worcestershire, screens milk from donor mums then pasteurises and sells it. The firm said there was a demand from parents wanting to buy it. But charities including the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) have written to the government to argue breast milk should not be bought or sold. Mother-of-three Megan Golub said she and her partner had turned to NeoKare after she had struggled to breastfeed her third son Oliver. After trying formula, "which was even worse", her partner Robin Gibb attempted to find breast milk from elsewhere. He tried not-for-profit milk banks but said access was not guaranteed "if you did not have a premature baby or if they … [Read more...] about Redditch firm defends sale of human breast milk

Rachael Bland’s fellow podcasters Deborah James and Lauren Mahon have paid tribute to the 40-year-old. ‘She had the most outrageous cackle and twinkle in her eye’: Dame Deborah James remembered by podcast co-host
Dame Deborah James ’ friend and podcast co-host Lauren Mahon has spoken for the first time since the bowel cancer activist’s death a week ago, describing her as having ‘the most outrageous cackle and twinkle in her eye.’ Mahon shared her grief while being interviewed on BBC Breakfast and said the former head teacher and mother-of-two’s death hadn’t ‘really hit.’ ‘We have moments where it feels very real and a bit overwhelming, but I think it is all a bit surreal. She was the comeback kid, so it’s all been a bit surreal,’ Mahon said. Dame Deborah, known as Bowelbabe, died on June 28 aged 40 , having been diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer in 2016. She had co-hosted the You, Me And The Big C podcast with Mahon and Rachael Bland – who died in September 2018 aged 40 after treatment for breast cancer. Late Deborah James ‘burst in on husband’s work call with sex toy and sieve in hand’
Dame Deborah James burst into the garden, unaware her husband Sebastien was on a work Zoom call. He turned to look at his wife; the inspirational cancer campaigner wearing a long sequin coat and feather headdress. In one hand she held aloft a large sex toy, in the other a kitchen sieve. This is the memory that Lauren Mahon says most encapsulates the essence of her best friend, who died last week aged just 40. “I am so proud of the dame, I am in awe of her, but I am sorry, I miss the deviant,” cancer activist Lauren says on the latest episode of BBC ’s You, Me and The Big C, the podcast she co-hosted with Deborah. During her short life, campaigner Deborah raised millions for Cancer Research UK, inspired many with her optimism and courage showcased through her social media account @bowelbabe and saved lives as she encouraged people to seek medical help if there was blood in their stool. Doctors’ #1 Source for Healthcare Information: Wikipedia
In spite of all of our teachers' and bosses' warnings that it's not a trustworthy source of information, we all rely on Wikipedia. Not only when we can’t remember the name of that guy from that movie, which is a fairly low-risk use, but also when we find a weird rash or are just feeling a little off and we’re not sure why. One in three Americans have tried to diagnose a medical condition with the help of the Internet, and a new report says doctors are just as drawn to Wikipedia’s flickering flame. According to the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics’ “ Engaging patients through social media ” report, Wikipedia is the top source of healthcare information for both doctors and patients. Fifty percent of physicians use Wikipedia for information, especially for specific conditions. Generally, more people turn to Wikipedia for rare diseases than common conditions. The top five conditions looked up on the site over the past year were: tuberculosis, Crohn’s disease, pneumonia, … [Read more...] about Doctors’ #1 Source for Healthcare Information: Wikipedia
Why I will continue to make the case for assisted dying
Today in the House of Commons, MPs will debate assisted dying for the first time in two and a half years. We have not been asked to vote on prospective legislation for almost seven. A great deal has changed in that time, not least the mood in Parliament. Having changed my own mind on the issue some time ago, my support for the legalisation of assisted dying as a choice for those nearing life’s end has only strengthened in recent years. Similarly, colleagues in my own party and across the House who have previously been sceptical of law change, even voting against previous bills, are reconsidering . That is significant. They increasingly recognise that there is a real and pressing need for us to review assisted dying legislation. As in my own experience, this sea-change in parliamentary opinion is the result of hearing about the failings of the current law from their own constituents. Last week I met my constituent Lyn from Wylde Green, whose husband died of prostate cancer in … [Read more...] about Why I will continue to make the case for assisted dying
Breastfeeding mum told to leave Rhyl swimming pool
Published 27 minutes ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A woman said she was left feeling humiliated after she was ordered from a swimming pool for breastfeeding. Sarah Lappin had finished a parent-and-toddler swimming session at the pool in Rhyl, Denbighshire, when she began feeding five-month-old son Kalel. But a lifeguard asked the 31-year-old to leave the pool if she wished to continue, even though it is legal to breastfeed in public. Rhyl Leisure Centre bosses have apologised for causing offence. Keen swimmer Ms Lappin said she had breastfed all five of her children in the same pool and was shocked to be told to stop by the lifeguard, who told her: "It's the rules."
