Woman chooses to have leg amputated after knee pain turns out to be rare cancer

July 5, 2022 by metro.co.uk

A 29-year-old from Glasgow was shocked to discover her chronic knee pain was actually a rare cancer . Rebekah Laverty suffered with debilitating knee trouble for years and was told in 2019 that she was suffering from an inflammatory condition called bursitis, which causes painful swelling. However, after years of unsuccessful treatments an MRI finally revealed she actually had a 13cm cancerous tumour above her right knee. ‘The type of cancer I have is usually found in the arms, legs or near joints such as the wrist or ankle but it’s so rare I’ve been told a GP will maybe see one case in their whole career – so mine wasn’t picked up,’ she explains. ‘My referrals were also delayed due to Covid. It took until September 2021 for me to be referred for an MRI and get some answers. ‘I received the news that I had this cancer at an appointment that I went to on my own. By then I’d been to countless appointments with no answers so I had no faith that this time would be any … [Read more...] about Woman chooses to have leg amputated after knee pain turns out to be rare cancer

Cancer patients and diabetics in Mariupol ‘dying from medicine shortage’

July 5, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Russian forces are cutting off the supply of life-saving drugs into the already battered city of Mariupol, officials have said. Mayor Vadym Boychenko said in a Telegram post yesterday that people ‘are at risk and cannot wait for the occupiers to deliver medicines’. The Mariupol City Council said locals in the southern port city are dying from a ‘shortage of drugs for cancer patients, people with diabetes , tuberculosis and problems with the thyroid gland’. It comes after Vladimir Putin’s forces subjected the city to a brutal Medieval-style siege for two months, which saw food, water and other vital supplies cut off. Relentless bombardment of infrastructure meant civilians routinely suffered internet blackouts, making them even more isolated from the outside world. Earlier in the invasion, Russia was accused of violating ceasefire agreements allowing safe exit routes for residents by shelling so-called humanitarian corridors. Putin’s forces declared victory … [Read more...] about Cancer patients and diabetics in Mariupol ‘dying from medicine shortage’

Thousands of bowel cancer deaths could be avoided if NHS made simple change

July 5, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk

THOUSANDS of lives could be saved from cancer with yearly gut checks, says Cancer Research UK. Posting bowel cancer screening kits to NHS patients every year instead of every two years could boost early diagnosis. The charity is urging people to get checked after Sun writer Dame Deborah James pleaded with Brits to “check your poo” before she died of the disease last week. A study by the University of Sheffield suggested 13.6 per cent more people would send samples if kits were sent every year. This could save the lives of at least 11,000 people already over 50 who are expected to die of the disease, it found. Michelle Mitchell, CEO of Cancer Research UK, said: “Screening is an effective way of catching cancer early and saving lives but not everyone engages. Rachael Bland’s fellow podcasters Deborah James and Lauren Mahon have paid tribute to the 40-year-old. Rachael tragically lost her battle with cancer on 5 September , just days after posting a goodbye message for fans online. The women she worked with on podcast You, Me And The Big C have since spoken out the loss of their ‘courageous’ friend. Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Mahon said: ‘That woman changed my life, and she changed it for the better. ‘We just bonded immediately. She showed me what it means to be courageous.’ Fellow podcaster James added: ‘I woke up this morning wanting it not to be real. ‘But I also woke up with an amazing sense of pride. ‘My cancer returned recently and she was the first person that I called. ‘She has held my hand. Late Deborah James ‘burst in on husband’s work call with sex toy and sieve in hand’

July 5, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

Dame Deborah James burst into the garden, unaware her husband Sebastien was on a work Zoom call. He turned to look at his wife; the inspirational cancer campaigner wearing a long sequin coat and feather headdress. In one hand she held aloft a large sex toy, in the other a kitchen sieve. This is the memory that Lauren Mahon says most encapsulates the essence of her best friend, who died last week aged just 40. “I am so proud of the dame, I am in awe of her, but I am sorry, I miss the deviant,” cancer activist Lauren says on the latest episode of BBC ’s You, Me and The Big C, the podcast she co-hosted with Deborah. During her short life, campaigner Deborah raised millions for Cancer Research UK, inspired many with her optimism and courage showcased through her social media account @bowelbabe and saved lives as she encouraged people to seek medical help if there was blood in their stool. She was the comeback kid, so it’s all been a bit surreal,’ Mahon said. Dame Deborah, known as Bowelbabe, died on June 28 aged 40 , having been diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer in 2016. She had co-hosted the You, Me And The Big C podcast with Mahon and Rachael Bland – who died in September 2018 aged 40 after treatment for breast cancer. Urgent summer health warning as millions of Brits urged to take more selfies

July 5, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk

BRITS have been urged to take more selfies as cases of deadly skin cancer rise. Medics have warned sun seekers to be aware of the most common signs of the illness as many experience hot weather . Around one in three people never look for tell-tale signals such as a new mole or a change in colour or shape of an existing one. Research from skin tracking app Miiskin found that just two in five Brits would check for skin cancer if an NHS screening was offered to them. The data comes as cases of the illness continue to rise in the UK with more than 2,500 skin cancer mortalities a year and 140,000 annual incidences of the disease. Around 15,000 of these tumours are melanoma , the most dangerous form. Figures shows that a quarter of Brits are concerned that tanning or sunburn in the past has damaged their skin , and many now regularly take skin ‘selfies’ to help spot signs of the disease developing. One in five have taken photos of their moles to track for … [Read more...] about Urgent summer health warning as millions of Brits urged to take more selfies

Doctors’ #1 Source for Healthcare Information: Wikipedia

March 5, 2014 by www.theatlantic.com

In spite of all of our teachers' and bosses' warnings that it's not a trustworthy source of information, we all rely on Wikipedia. Not only when we can’t remember the name of that guy from that movie, which is a fairly low-risk use, but also when we find a weird rash or are just feeling a little off and we’re not sure why. One in three Americans have tried to diagnose a medical condition with the help of the Internet, and a new report says doctors are just as drawn to Wikipedia’s flickering flame. According to the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics’ “ Engaging patients through social media ” report, Wikipedia is the top source of healthcare information for both doctors and patients. Fifty percent of physicians use Wikipedia for information, especially for specific conditions. Generally, more people turn to Wikipedia for rare diseases than common conditions. The top five conditions looked up on the site over the past year were: tuberculosis, Crohn’s disease, pneumonia, … [Read more...] about Doctors’ #1 Source for Healthcare Information: Wikipedia
