Reigning champions Germany are OUT of the World Cup after a shock defeat by South Korea. It is the first time since 1938 that Germany have been eliminated from the competition at the very first stage. Joachim Loew’s men failed to break down a resilient Korean side, who still had slender hopes of making the knockout stages themselves on the final day of Group F fixtures. Then Kim Young-gwon popped up in stoppage time to prod home from a corner, before Son Heung-min made it 2-0, catching Manuel Neuer out of his goal. So long as the game was goalless, Germany knew that just one goal would have seen them progress and set up a mouthwatering last 16 clash with Brazil. But they were caught out as they pushed men forward in the closing stages. Instead it is Sweden or Mexico who progress from the group and will face Brazil - depending on their result later this evening. Read the full review of the match here. GERMANY have shocked the world by leaving Manchester City's in-form winger Leroy Sane out of their squad for World Cup 2018. And boss Joachim Low has revealed the reasons why one of City's standout performers will not be going to Russia. Mexico fans are in festival mood before World Cup opener against Germany Why hasn't Joachim Low picked Leroy Sane for the Germany World Cup squad? Joachim Low says he opted for Bayer Leverkusen star Julian Brandt over Sane, with Thomas Muller, Marco Reus and Julian Draxler the other players in the Man City star's position. The Germany boss commented: "That was a very close decision between him and Julian Brandt, which was made in favor of Brandt. Draxler, Reus and Müller are set. Leroy has a huge talent. "He will be back again from September. He had not arrived in international matches yet. "It was a very close decision. If it was a 100 metre race, it would have been a photo finish."
