· February 26, 2021 ·

A seven-year old girl who was recently diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour has been reunited with her "soul mate" and twin brother after being separated for the first time. Claudia Carrick, from Bootle, Merseyside, received the shock diagnosis at Alder Hey after becoming ill at school earlier this month. She had developed a sore throat and difficulty swallowing on February 11 so her mother booked her in for a GP appointment. Claudia had no other symptoms and was her "usual bubbly self", before she fell ill later that day while at school, where teachers said she had lost her balance, the Liverpool Echo reports. The seven-year-old was rushed to Alder Hey Children's Hospital where doctors found fluid on her brain and an operation the next day revealed she had a brain tumour. Man murdered wife after becoming ‘fixated’ on money believing she ‘had everything’

· February 22, 2021 ·

A man murdered his wife just days after getting her to sign papers that would make him rich if she died. Raymond Hoadley has been jailed for life for murdering his wife Jackie Hoadley after becoming "fixated" on money. "Devoted and caring" disability campaigner Jackie was found dead in July last year. The 58-year-old was praised in tributes as an "institution" who "gave so much to so many people". Her estranged husband, Hoadley, 62, broke into her home in Eastbourne, East Sussex, at night and killed her. He appeared for sentencing at Lewes Crown Court on Monday after being convicted of murder at a trial last month. Prosecutor Caroline Carberry QC told the court that Hoadley had "had murder on his mind for some time" and was motivated in part by financial gain. "The defendant was fixated on money, both historically and in the weeks and days leading up to the killing," she said. "He expressed to a number of people the view that Jackie had everything and he had nothing." … [Read more...] about Man murdered wife after becoming ‘fixated’ on money believing she ‘had everything’

JIM SILLARS: I’ve been a lifelong SNP supporter… but the stench is such that I cannot hold my nose and vote for the party in May

· February 26, 2021 ·

JIM SILLARS is the former deputy leader of the Scottish National Party Is the cause of independence damaged by what started out as the Salmond-Sturgeon clash? Has it now become the cause of grave concern that two of our most important institutions, our parliament and the Government drawn from it, and the Crown Office, now lie under a dark cloud of suspicion of political corruption? There can be no other answer but yes. The SNP became the chosen instrument by many to take Scotland to independence, and as such gathered membership and parliamentary strength in recent years. Fairly or not, the trust people put on the idea of independence is linked to their trust in the SNP. Where trust was heavily invested was in its commitment to the ethical standards essential for a democracy to survive: honesty by those who have the power to be dishonest, restraint in the use of power by those in a position to abuse it, adhering to the codes of justice by those with the power to ignore … [Read more...] about JIM SILLARS: I’ve been a lifelong SNP supporter… but the stench is such that I cannot hold my nose and vote for the party in May

David Beckham-backed cannabis venture scores dizzy high on market debut

· February 26, 2021 ·

A cannabis venture, which counts David Beckham among its investors, has seen its share price rise more than four-fold during its London stock market debut. Cellular Goods, which wants to sell skincare and topical creams using biosynthetic cannabinoids, saw shares climb from their offer price of 5p to above 20p when the opening price was declared on Friday. The flotation, which was 13-times oversubscribed, was aimed at raising £13m for development work and expansion after City rules were changed last year to allow cannabis-linked listings for medicinal ventures. Sky News revealed earlier this month that Cellular would be the first company of its kind to take advantage of the relaxation of the criteria through the Initial Public Offering (IPO). The success of the launch means Beckham's holding has surged in value as a result.
