Back to the border of misery: Amexica revisited 10 years on
If you drink the water in Ciudad Juárez, there you’ll stay, goes the saying – Se toma agua de Juárez, allí se queda. It’s not a reference to the quality of drinking water (about which polemic abounds because it is so dirty) but to the beguiling lure of this dusty and dangerous yet strong and charismatic city. It’s a dictum that might be applied to the whole 2,000-mile Mexico-US borderland of which Juárez and its sister city on the US side, El Paso, form the fulcrum. Ten years ago, I returned from several months’ immersion along that frontier, reporting on a narco-cartel war for this newspaper and eventually writing a book, Amexica, about the terrain astride the border, land that has a single identity – that belongs to both countries and yet to neither. Mexican drug lord’s insider notes may set him free after 10 years
The young Mexican drug lord Jesus Vicente Zambada Niebla made headlines three years ago when he claimed the United States government had protected his father's drug cartel in return for providing information against rival cartel members. Now, with the revelation this week that Zambada's legal team and the US attorney's office signed a secret plea agreement a year ago, he has struck a deal of his own. It is, in effect, a cooperation agreement. With the stroke of a pen, the cartel insider who once vowed to put US undercover operations in Mexico on trial turned into an informant against the Sinaloa cartel of his powerful father, Ismael Zambada, a kingpin known simply as El Mayo. Zambada, 39, was captured in 2009 in Mexico City by a special unit of the Mexican army, four hours after he met in a private room at the Sheraton Hotel with two agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration. He was extradited to Chicago in 2010 to face charges that he was the “logistical … [Read more...] about Mexican drug lord’s insider notes may set him free after 10 years
I’ll never forgive Mommie: Joan Crawford’s daughter gives first interview in 10 years
Christina Crawford was 13 when she stopped believing her mother loved her. It was a young age at which to come to such a startling conclusion, to have one’s belief in the benignity of the world so profoundly altered. But it was at this age that she remembers her mother grabbed her by the throat, punched her in the face and slammed her head against the floor. ‘You never forget that,’ Christina says now, 55 years later. ‘It was up close and personal. She came this far from my face, and you could see it in her eyes, you can see if someone is trying to kill you.’ It was a side of her mother that no one else ever saw. To the wider public, Christina’s mother was not the abusive parent, prone to uncontrolled bouts of fury. She was not the alcoholic, given to occasional bursts of sporadic violence. She was not the tyrannical harpy who apparently let rip behind closed doors. To everyone else she was simply Joan Crawford, Hollywood movie star. At the height of … [Read more...] about I’ll never forgive Mommie: Joan Crawford’s daughter gives first interview in 10 years
