Boris Johnson accused of squandering Brexit dividend

Business leaders have accused Boris Johnson of squandering a post-Brexit opportunity to slash red tape and taxes as the cost of living crisis threatens to plunge the country into recession. Executives and Tory donors attacked the Prime Minister for his "awful" and "half-hearted" efforts at reform after inflation surged to a 40-year high and the Bank of England warned that the country is on the brink of a prolonged downturn. Michael Spencer, a billionaire City tycoon who has given millions of pounds to the Conservative party, said: “So far there has been no rolling back of unwanted and useless Euro regulations and restrictions. It has been an awful wasted opportunity.” It came as British consumer confidence plunged to the lowest in at least half a century, driven by the escalating cost of living crisis. Boris Johnson’s former Remainer dad becomes a French citizen

Boris Johnson ’s dad is keeping his ties to the EU after taking up French citizenship. Stanley Johnson, 81, was famously an impassioned Remainer, despite his son being the face of the Brexit campaign. But he’s recently renounced his views, writing that leaving the EU was ‘probably a good idea’ after all. He also said he found the bloc’s response to the war in Ukraine disappointing, but he made sure to get his European citizenship first. Mr Johnson, from Cornwall, started his application to ‘reclaim’ his identity as a Frenchman last November. His links to to the country come from his French mum, Irene Williams. Typically, the descendants of French nationals cannot claim nationality if they have been in a different country for more than 50 years. But people can still get citizenship if they can prove ‘concrete ties of a cultural, professional, economic or family nature’.
