Boris Johnson ‘turned blind eye to Chris Pincher’s sex pest allegations’
Boris Johnson has been accused of turning a blind eye to groping allegations against an MP he handed a senior role to. Until Thursday, Chris Pincher was one of the prime minister’s key lieutenants responsible for enforcing discipline among Tory MPs. He quit after being accused of assaulting two men at a private member’s club , admitting in his resignation letter that he had ‘drank too much’. A string of further allegations have emerged against the Tamworth MP since he stepped down, raising serious questions about why he was appointed to the role in the first place. According to former adviser Dominic Cummings, the PM referred to him ‘laughingly in No 10 as “Pincher by name, pincher by nature” long before appointing him’. The Johnson ally was reappointed to the role after quitting in 2017 when he faced sexual misconduct allegations from a Tory activist. Alex Story, a former Olympic rower, referred to him as a ‘pound shop Harvey Weinstein’ at the time but he was … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson ‘turned blind eye to Chris Pincher’s sex pest allegations’
Tory rebels are plotting another vote to oust Boris Johnson this month
Boris Johnson could face another no confidence vote this month as Tory rebels plot to overhaul 1922 Committee rules. Under current rules , the Prime Minister cannot face a challenge to his leadership until next June, when it will be 12 months since the most recent confidence vote. But backbenchers have launched a plot to oust him sooner than this by getting rebels elected to the 1922 Committee’s executive and then changing the rules to allow an earlier vote. At the moment, the chairman of the committee must receive 54 letters from MPs – representing 15 per cent of the parliamentary party – expressing their lack of confidence in the Prime Minister to trigger a vote. But there is a plan to add a new rule that would state that if 90 new letters – representing 25 per cent of the party – are submitted, it could trigger a new vote immediately rather than having to wait for the full year to elapse. The count for letters calling for the Prime Minister to go is reset after each … [Read more...] about Tory rebels are plotting another vote to oust Boris Johnson this month

Boris Johnson sought advice on appointing disgraced MP Chris Pincher due to reports about behaviour
Boris Johnson was "aware of media reports… of inappropriate behaviour" by disgraced MP Chris Pincher and sought advice before appointing him to be his deputy chief whip, Downing Street has confirmed. Speaking to reporters on Monday, the prime minister's official spokesman said Mr Johnson was "not aware of any specific allegations being looked at" and "in the absence of formal complaint, it was not deemed appropriate to stop an appointment on the basis of unsubstantiated allegations". But he said the PM was "aware of media reports that others had seen over the years and some allegations that were either resolved or did not progress to a formal complaint", so sought advice from his propriety and ethics team before his appointment. Mr Pincher is no longer sitting in Parliament as a Tory MP after a complaint he groped two men. Since then, he has faced a number of historical claims, which he denies. Downing Street said Mr Pincher was not blocked from the job because the allegations were unsubstantiated. Mr Johnson has been under mounting pressure to reveal what he knew about the allegations at the time Mr Pincher was appointed deputy chief whip. Boris Johnson’s ministers would rather keep degrading themselves than do the obvious
Ninety-six hours have now passed since one of Westminster ’s most well-known wronguns did, yet again, the very wrong thing for which they are very well known, and had to resign (again). That the now former deputy chief whip Chris Pincher got drunk and groped someone has shocked Westminster. Arguably it has not been this shocked since it became clear that some parties had happened in Downing Street even though Boris Johnson said there hadn’t. But what is causing actual shock is a growing sense that this might be the scandal that sends government ministers, both junior and senior, over the tipping point with regard to their willingness to go on television and radio and repeat their boss’s lies. Johnson appointed Pincher deputy chief whip in February. He has since claimed to have not been “aware” of any allegations against him. This was then upgraded to “specific allegations”. On Monday morning, the line was gently tweaked again to “specific serious allegation.” … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson’s ministers would rather keep degrading themselves than do the obvious
Boris Johnson looks increasingly isolated over Chris Pincher saga – and it could get worse still
The prime minister, back on home soil on Monday and back on familiar ground too, emerged from Number 10 to confront another scandal engulfing this government - this time over his decision to appoint Chris Pincher as deputy chief whip in February despite widespread concerns over his alleged conduct. Mr Johnson is now facing questions over what he knew and when, after the government last week suspended the 52-year-old as a Tory MP after an official complaint was made over his alleged drunken groping. Many Conservative MPs are quietly fuming over the handling of the entire affair, from Number 10 initially resisting withdrawing the whip from Mr Pincher after he resigned on Thursday night for his drunken and "embarrassing" behaviour, only to suspend it 24 hours later after a formal complaint was lodged over his alleged groping of two men at an event at the Carlton Club on Wednesday. On top of that, Number 10 insisted for three days that the prime minister didn't know of any … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson looks increasingly isolated over Chris Pincher saga – and it could get worse still
No 10 finally admits Boris was aware of claims about disgraced Tory MP Chris Pincher
Boris Johnson was ‘aware’ of allegations against Chris Pincher when he was appointed as deputy chief whip. Mr Pincher resigned on Thursday after reportedly ‘admitting to drunkenly assaulting two men’. He quit in a letter to Mr Johnson, admitting he ‘embarrassed’ himself while intoxicated the night before. Yesterday, cabinet minister Therese Coffey had told Sky News she didn’t believe the Prime Minister had been ‘aware’ of the incidents prior to the letter. But a No 10 spokesperson has today said the Tory leader was ‘aware’ but it would have been ‘not appropriate’ for him to step in. They said: ‘I can’t get into too much detail but he did take advice on some of the allegations that had been made, but there was no formal complaint at that time and it was deemed not appropriate to stop an appointment simply because of unsubstantiated allegations.’ Mr Johnson had faced mounting pressure to confirm whether he knew about Mr Pincher’s past.
