Boris Johnson imposes steel tariffs to win back Red Wall
Boris Johnson will risk fresh allegations that he is breaking international law this week as he imposes sweeping new steel tariffs as part of an effort to win back support in Red Wall seats. The Prime Minister is preparing to hit several developing countries with new “safeguard” import limits designed to protect UK manufacturers from a “flood of cheap steel” from overseas. At the same time, ministers will announce a two-year extension of steel tariffs already imposed on developed countries and China. The moves, being finalised for an announcement this week, will expose Mr Johnson to allegations that he is breaching World Trade Organisation rules in order to protect the British steel industry. They are the changes cited by Lord Geidt, the Prime Minister’s former ethics adviser, when he quit earlier this month and said he was put in an “odious position” of being asked to “license” a breach of the ministerial code, which requires ministers to abide by international law. But … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson imposes steel tariffs to win back Red Wall
Boris Johnson fuels speculation of another petrol duty cut as pump prices soar
Boris Johnson has opened the door to cutting fuel duty again to help with the rising cost of petrol. The Prime Minister said on Monday that the public was asking the Government what more could be done to help them at the pumps . There was also an indication from a Treasury minister that the incoming corporation tax rise could be reduced or scrapped at this autumn’s Budget. Downing Street and Treasury spokesmen continue to argue that no firm decisions have been taken on tax policy, with the next Budget still half a year away. Mr Johnson and Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor, have talked about their enthusiasm for more tax cuts . However, they have cautioned that such cuts can only take place if they will not exacerbate the surge in inflation . During an interview with the BBC on Monday, Mr Johnson mentioned public pressure to help with fuel bills as he discussed criticisms of his leadership. He said that “of course, there are going to be criticisms of political leaders”, … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson fuels speculation of another petrol duty cut as pump prices soar
US remains beacon of freedom despite Supreme Court abortion ruling, says Boris Johnson
Boris Johnson has said that the US remains a “shining city on a hill” for “rights and freedom” despite overturning Roe v Wade . The Prime Minister said in an interview with CNN while at the G7 summit in Germany that he did not think the ruling by the Supreme Court damaged the country’s reputation. Rowing back on his comments made while in Rwanda earlier in the week, he said: “I want to stress this isn’t our court, it’s not our jurisdiction, so in a sense, anything I say is for the United States. “But, Roe v Wade judgment when it came out was huge psychologically for people around the world and it spoke of the advancement of the rights of women. “I regret what seems to me [to be] a backwards step. But this is me looking in from the outside.” When asked if he thought it hurt the US as a representative of rights and freedom, the Prime Minister said: “No, I want to be very clear about that. “The United States is, for me, it remains, you know, a shining city on a … [Read more...] about US remains beacon of freedom despite Supreme Court abortion ruling, says Boris Johnson
Letters: If Boris Johnson won’t accept the by-election verdict, then Tory MPs must force him out
SIR – Boris Johnson was very happy to receive the credit for his party’s success in the 2019 general election, but is not prepared to accept the blame for the two disastrous by-election results just suffered . Those members who did not support him in the recent vote of confidence have the solution in their hands. They should advise the Chief Whip that they will be abstaining in all parliamentary votes until he resigns. They would be doing the country a great service. Donald Sutherland SIR – I commend this explanation of integrity to the Prime Minister. It is taken from the leadership handbook of the Rifles Regiment. “Integrity is the value without which one cannot be a true leader of men. It means that a leader must be genuine and utterly sound, be honest to himself and others and have no trace of hypocrisy. It involves taking responsibility for things that are his fault. It means not betraying a trust, even when it may now be an accepted part of civil society’s culture … [Read more...] about Letters: If Boris Johnson won’t accept the by-election verdict, then Tory MPs must force him out
Wednesday morning news briefing: Boris Johnson’s new Cabinet split
Boris Johnson is to issue a rallying cry to fellow world leaders today. The Prime Minister is attending a Nato summit at which he will call on other member nations to "dig deep" and increase defence spending targets beyond the current level of 2pc of GDP. But his call threatens to be undermined by opposition from two senior Cabinet ministers over his refusal to increase Britain's own budget from 2.3pc – and concern he is planning to breach a manifesto commitment to link military spending to inflation. Mr Johnson is resisting public pressure from his Defence Secretary and the head of the Army to increase military spending, amid a heated Cabinet split over future funding. We can reveal that Downing Street intervened to water down calls for higher defence expenditure from Ben Wallace. Political editor Ben Riley-Smith reports how No 10 was said to have been left "furious" by what was seen as attempts to bounce Mr Johnson into making an announcement. And Tom Rees explains … [Read more...] about Wednesday morning news briefing: Boris Johnson’s new Cabinet split

Putin mocked over topless photos by Boris Johnson and Canada’s Justin Trudeau as world leaders gather for G7
BORIS Johnson and Canada's Justin Trudeau openly mocked Mad Vlad Putin as world leaders gathered in Germany for the G7. With the situation in Ukraine top of the agenda at the annual talks high in the Bavarian mountains, the Kremlin tyrant was the butt of early jokes for his bizarre photo ops shooting bears and riding topless. At the start of talks between the leaders of the industrial powers, the PM declared “we have to show that we’re tougher than Putin" as he took off jacket. And the Canadian PM quipped back suggesting they go for a “bare chested horseback ride", with BoJo adding: "show our pecks". Mr Johnson used his first meeting on the fringes of the Summit to warn France's President Macron not to go soft of Ukraine or urge Voldoymer Zelensky into an unfair peace settlement. The PM warned “any attempt to settle the conflict now will only cause enduring instability and give Putin licence to manipulate both sovereign countries and international markets in … [Read more...] about Putin mocked over topless photos by Boris Johnson and Canada’s Justin Trudeau as world leaders gather for G7
