Ever since he was replaced as health secretary by Boris Johnson, Jeremy Hunt has been busily diagnosing all the Government’s ills. Having refused to accept what he perceived as a demotion to defence secretary after Johnson beat him to the door of No 10 in July 2019, the Prime Minister’s leadership rival has gone on the offensive. As the influential chairman of the health and social care select committee, he spent much of the pandemic voicing his criticisms of Downing Street’s response to coronavirus. No one was therefore surprised when the politician with the shortest odds to replace the Prime Minister announced he would be voting against him in Monday’s confidence ballot. In a series of tweets seen as starting the firing gun on a second leadership pitch, the MP for South West Surrey insisted: “Conservative MPs know in our hearts we are not giving the British people the leadership they deserve. We are not offering the integrity, competence and vision necessary to unleash … [Read more...] about Why ‘honest, trustworthy’ Jeremy Hunt mightn’t be right as Boris Johnson’s right-hand-man

You’re a Cossack now, Ukrainians tell Boris Johnson and his ‘freedom-loving hair’
Boris Johnson has been officially inducted into Ukraine’s Cossack community and given a new name that pays homage to his hairstyle in another token of gratitude for his support during the war . A Cossack community in Chernihiv, in northern Ukraine, officially made the prime minister a Cossack and gave him the name of Boris Chuprina, which means “a long lock of hair”, Ukraine’s public broadcaster said. Two local artists have painted a picture of Mr Johnson dressed as the Cossack Mamay, a Ukrainian folkloric hero playing the kobza, a lute-like instrument, which is now on display at the local museum. Cossacks, who originated from the steppe of present-day Ukraine and Russia, were a semi-nomadic and semi-militarised people who fought for Ukraine’s independence while the country was stuck between present-day Poland and Russia. After signing a treaty with Russia in the 17th century, Cossacks became a vital force to defend the sprawling borders of the Russian empire. Monday morning UK news briefing: Boris Johnson faces Cabinet backlash over Chris Pincher allegations
Boris Johnson is facing a Cabinet backlash over his handling of allegations against Chris Pincher, amid anger among ministers at being asked to defend the affair. Speaking to the Telegraph on Sunday night, sources close to three Cabinet ministers criticised the Prime Minister's decision to appoint Mr Pincher to the role of deputy chief whip and expressed dismay at having to publicly answer questions about what Mr Johnson knew about claims of sexual impropriety. Let Chinese ambassador into Parliament, Stanley Johnson tells Government
Stanley Johnson has called for China's ambassador to be allowed into Parliament, ahead of a controversial trip to Xinjiang . Boris Johnson’s father intends to visit the region, home to the persecuted Uyghur minority , as he retraces the steps of Marco Polo. Mr Johnson said Zheng Zeguang, the Chinese ambassador to Britain, was a very "agreeable, capable and intelligent man" and that he hoped the ban would be lifted. "If there is a ban, as you say there is, I would imagine Parliament is breaking up for the summer pretty soon. But I would very much hope that by the time Parliament returns, these bans will no longer be in place," Mr Johnson said. He celebrated Mr Zeguang for his "enthusiasm" for the upcoming project and said it had the potential to revamp Chinese-British relations. The statements contradict the Prime Minister’s push to increase pressure on China for human rights abuses in Xinjiang.
