Boy butchers hairdo while mum was on phone because he ‘looked like Boris Johnson’

· February 26, 2021 ·

A mum was left in hysterics when her son butchered his hair with a pair of children's scissors after he decided he looked too much like Boris Johnson . Melanie Henry, from Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, left five-year-old son, Angus, to play while she took a work call. The 32-year-old returned to find he'd chopped off his blonde locks with a pair of children's scissors. Melanie, a teacher, has been working from home as well as keeping an eye on Angus and his siblings, Struan, nine, and Piper, four. After friends and family pointed out Angus' resemblance to the Prime Minister, the schoolboy decided to take matters into his own hands. She said: "I was on a work call when and when I came off he had cut his hair so all the fringe was gone. Any amusing lockdown haircuts in your family? Email us [email protected] "I just asked him what had happened and he said he did it because I'd said that the salons were shut and he didn't want to wait for a hair cut. "I was … [Read more...] about Boy butchers hairdo while mum was on phone because he ‘looked like Boris Johnson’

Boris Johnson told to ditch ‘very extravagant’ manifesto pledges ahead of Budget

· February 25, 2021 ·

Boris Johnson has been urged to tell the public some “difficult home truths” about the economic damage unleashed by the Covid pandemic. Tory ex-Chancellor Philip Hammond urged the Government to ditch “very extravagant” promises from its manifesto ahead of next week’s Budget. Rishi Sunak , the new occupant of No 11, is expected to extend Covid support until the end of lockdown in June in his financial statement. This is set to include £30bn on extending the furlough jobs support scheme and business relief, as well as the Universal Credit uplift and the stamp duty holiday. But there are also likely to be tax hikes, including putting corporation tax up to around 24% and an increase in capital gains tax. Tory MPs threatening rebellion over tax rises on business have been warned they face the chop. No 10 says Budget votes will be a “confidence issue”, meaning any rebels risk losing the party whip. Former PM David Cameron warned the Chancellor that tax rises “wouldn’t … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson told to ditch ‘very extravagant’ manifesto pledges ahead of Budget

Brexit: Northern Ireland halts construction of import inspection facilities

· February 26, 2021 ·

Uncertainty around the future of the Northern Ireland protocol has seen the construction of purpose-built inspection facilities at ports halted. There will still be checks on agricultural and food products, but these will be carried out in existing buildings that have been repurposed for the post- Brexit task, the country's agriculture minister has said. Gordon Lyons of the DUP said that recruitment of inspection staff for the new port facilities at places like Belfast and Larne had been stopped, and charges levied on traders bringing goods from Great Britain into Northern Ireland were also shelved. Mr Lyons said his decision was based on "practical difficulties" caused by the protocol, which came as part of the UK's trade deal with the EU. The agreement struck saw trade checks enacted on products travelling between Northern Ireland and Great Britain, however these regulatory and customs checks were moved to the Irish Sea to avoid a border on the island of … [Read more...] about Brexit: Northern Ireland halts construction of import inspection facilities

Coronavirus: AstraZeneca admits huge vaccine shortfall for EU

· January 25, 2021 ·

Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca will deliver to the EU less than half the amount of COVID-19 vaccine doses that it pledged for the first quarter of 2021, company boss Pascal Soriot admitted to European lawmakers on Thursday. The drugmaker has long said it will not be able to fulfill its target, but the confirmation remains a blow to the EU's vaccine rollout. The bloc has fallen far behind the United States, Britain and Israel in vaccinating its public, blaming supply chain issues. About 8% of the adult population of the EU have been vaccinated, according to European Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen. AstraZeneca will now try and deliver 40 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine by the end of March, down from an initial 90 million. The pledge is in line with previous statements from the company. On Wednesday, AstraZeneca said it would only be able to deliver half the COVID-19 vaccines it was contracted to supply the EU in the second quarter of 2021. The EU has … [Read more...] about Coronavirus: AstraZeneca admits huge vaccine shortfall for EU

Scotland will allow gyms, pubs and shops to open in late April if cases fall

· February 23, 2021 ·

Scotland will move back to regional levels of Covid restrictions by the end of April with a "phased but significant" reopening of the economy, Nicola Sturgeon has said. Pubs, non-essential retail, gyms and hairdressers could be able to operate from the last week of April, the First Minister told MSPs. The "stay at home" order could also be lifted from April 5, she said in a statement to the Scottish Parliament. Under the plans, Scotland would return to a five-level system in the last week of April, similar to the old tiered system in England. Ms Sturgeon expressed optimism that areas in Level 4 could drop to Level 3 at this point, allowing shuttered parts of the economy to reopen. She said: "It is therefore from the last week of April that we would expect to see phased but significant reopening of the economy, including non-essential retail, hospitality and services like gyms and hairdressers. "And, of course, the more of us who are vaccinated and the more we all stick by … [Read more...] about Scotland will allow gyms, pubs and shops to open in late April if cases fall
