Boris johnson 6 new rules

Tory rebels are plotting another vote to oust Boris Johnson this month

July 3, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Boris Johnson could face another no confidence vote this month as Tory rebels plot to overhaul 1922 Committee rules. Under current rules , the Prime Minister cannot face a challenge to his leadership until next June, when it will be 12 months since the most recent confidence vote. But backbenchers have launched a plot to oust him sooner than this by getting rebels elected to the 1922 Committee’s executive and then changing the rules to allow an earlier vote. At the moment, the chairman of the committee must receive 54 letters from MPs – representing 15 per cent of the parliamentary party – expressing their lack of confidence in the Prime Minister to trigger a vote. But there is a plan to add a new rule that would state that if 90 new letters – representing 25 per cent of the party – are submitted, it could trigger a new vote immediately rather than having to wait for the full year to elapse. The count for letters calling for the Prime Minister to go is reset after each … [Read more...] about Tory rebels are plotting another vote to oust Boris Johnson this month

Monday morning UK news briefing: Boris Johnson faces Cabinet backlash over Chris Pincher allegations

July 4, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Boris Johnson is facing a Cabinet backlash over his handling of allegations against Chris Pincher, amid anger among ministers at being asked to defend the affair. Speaking to the Telegraph on Sunday night, sources close to three Cabinet ministers criticised the Prime Minister's decision to appoint Mr Pincher to the role of deputy chief whip and expressed dismay at having to publicly answer questions about what Mr Johnson knew about claims of sexual impropriety. Read why one source said Mr Johnson has found himself in a "completely invidious position" . Mr Pincher, who resigned as deputy chief whip on Thursday, has been suspended from the Conservative Party and faces a formal investigation after claims he had drunkenly groped two men at an event at the Carlton Club. Therese Coffey, the work and pensions secretary, said people should go to the police if they think they are a victim of sexual assault. The scandal is whipping up a frenzy of, to say the least, … [Read more...] about Monday morning UK news briefing: Boris Johnson faces Cabinet backlash over Chris Pincher allegations

Boris Johnson knew about Chris Pincher allegations before his appointment, No 10 admits

July 4, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Boris Johnson had heard about allegations of sexual misconduct against Chris Pincher before appointing him to the Government but did not ask him about them, Downing Street has admitted. Number 10 said on Monday that Mr Johnson was aware of rumours about the Tory MP’s conduct but believed all incidents had either been resolved or had not been formally reported. Mr Pincher is seeking medical help after his resignation from the Government and loss of the Conservative whip over claims that he sexually assaulted two men in the Carlton Club, in central London, last week. At least 12 other alleged incidents have now been reported in the media. Mark Dabbs, a charity fundraiser in Mr Pincher’s Tamworth constituency, claimed in The Sun on Monday that he had been groped as they posed for a photograph in 2018. Although it is thought no official complaints have been made to police, Parliament’s independent complaints and grievances scheme is investigating Mr Pincher’s conduct. … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson knew about Chris Pincher allegations before his appointment, No 10 admits

Ministers will publish a review of legislation, including new curbs on minimum stakes, ‘non-intrusive’ affordability checks and banning free bets and VIP packages for those who lose big sums. The Gambling Commission – the industry regulator – will also be given new powers and additional funding, while a new ombudsman will strengthen customers’ rights if gambling companies fail to be socially responsible. Boris Johnson looks increasingly isolated over Chris Pincher saga – and it could get worse still

July 4, 2022 by news.sky.com

The prime minister, back on home soil on Monday and back on familiar ground too, emerged from Number 10 to confront another scandal engulfing this government - this time over his decision to appoint Chris Pincher as deputy chief whip in February despite widespread concerns over his alleged conduct. Mr Johnson is now facing questions over what he knew and when, after the government last week suspended the 52-year-old as a Tory MP after an official complaint was made over his alleged drunken groping. Many Conservative MPs are quietly fuming over the handling of the entire affair, from Number 10 initially resisting withdrawing the whip from Mr Pincher after he resigned on Thursday night for his drunken and "embarrassing" behaviour, only to suspend it 24 hours later after a formal complaint was lodged over his alleged groping of two men at an event at the Carlton Club on Wednesday. On top of that, Number 10 insisted for three days that the prime minister didn't know of any … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson looks increasingly isolated over Chris Pincher saga – and it could get worse still

Keir Starmer compares Tory Brexit to ‘wet wipe island’ and vows to sort Johnson’s ‘poor deal’

July 4, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

Keir Starmer will accuse the Tories of creating a "hulking fatberg" of Brexit red tape in a speech laying out Labour's plans for the future relationship with Brussels. The Labour leader is expected to unveil his new plan to "Make Brexit Work", in a nod to Boris Johnson's election-winning promise to "Get Brexit Done" in 2019. In a speech today, Mr Starmer will say Labour won't undo Brexit and make it clear he won't try to rejoin the EU's single market and customs union. But he will denounce the "mess" created by Mr Johnson and say the Tories have "created a hulking ‘fatberg’ of red tape", in a comparison to the 'wet wipe island' found in the river Thames. “It is hampering the flow of British business. We will break that barrier down," he was due to say, according remarks first trailed to the FT. Mr Starmer, who was Shadow Brexit Secretary under Jeremy Corbyn , has been quiet on his former brief amid deep divisions in the party's ranks over the issue.
