Droughts, fires and floods: Could climate change decide Australia’s election?

January 18, 2022 by www.dw.com

The results of the Australian election this Saturday will set the climate agenda for one of the planet's worst per-capita CO2 emitters. It comes as the world faces a rapidly closing window to stop the most severe impacts of climate change. The country, dubbed a "wrecker" at climate change negotiations, is a major exporter of fossil fuels, largely to East Asia and India. It has been criticized for grossly insufficient climate targets by the UK and US as well as its neighboring Pacific nations who could see their homes disappear as sea levels rise. Voters facing record floods and droughts want more climate action Australians want action on climate change, but major parties have hardly mentioned the issue in their election campaigns At the same time, polls clearly show voters back stronger climate action in the "sunburned land," having already experienced deadly and costly flooding and wildfires linked to climate change in recent years. Some big businesses, once against … [Read more...] about Droughts, fires and floods: Could climate change decide Australia’s election?

Boris Johnson told: You’re safe from partygate … but expect more rebellions

May 19, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Tories have warned Boris Johnson that he may face more rebellions over the cost of living, but concede he has ridden out the partygate scandal . Several of the ringleaders of a plot to oust Mr Johnson from office earlier this year told The Telegraph they now believe he will not face an imminent leadership challenge, but could face more trouble from his backbenches over the cost of living crisis . On Thursday, the Metropolitan Police announced it had concluded Operation Hillman, its investigation into lockdown-breaking parties in Downing Street during the pandemic. The official end of the investigation means there is no prospect Mr Johnson will receive another fixed penalty notice over partygate, having been handed just one for an event for his birthday in June 2020 . On Thursday Sir Charles Walker, who said in February he would “applaud” the Prime Minister for resigning over the scandal, admitted he had been wrong. “Four months ago, most people thought he was down and … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson told: You’re safe from partygate … but expect more rebellions

Rishi Sunak faces Tory mutiny over tax cuts as Cabinet colleagues call for action

May 19, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Cabinet ministers publicly pressed Rishi Sunak to lower taxes on Wednesday as the Chancellor used a speech to promise a tax cut for businesses in the autumn. Liz Truss, the Foreign Secretary, and Alister Jack, the Scottish Secretary, both argued for new reductions in tax as they discussed the cost of living crisis. Ms Truss called for a “low tax economy” in a BBC Radio 4 Today programme interview in which she initially prevaricated when asked if she backed the Government’s National Insurance rise. Mr Jack told ITV News Border’s politics program: “What more I’d like to see done is a further tax cut because that’s how you get money into people’s pockets.” The public interventions hint at the strength of support for tax cuts in Cabinet as Mr Sunak juggles with the competing demands of soaring inflation and stuttering economic growth. The Chancellor used a speech at a Confederation of British Industry (CBI) event to indicate business tax cuts are coming in his autumn Budget … [Read more...] about Rishi Sunak faces Tory mutiny over tax cuts as Cabinet colleagues call for action

Windfall tax: Splits between Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak over policy

May 19, 2022 by news.sky.com

Splits have emerged between Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak over how to respond to Labour's call for a windfall tax on energy companies. Sky News understands that Mr Sunak regarded it as unhelpful that Tory MPs were ordered to vote against the policy - which is intended to pay for a cut in household energy bills. Government sources told The Sun newspaper that the chancellor's team had "pushed hard" to abstain on the vote but were overruled by Number 10. Politics hub: Rishi Sunak accused of being 'tone deaf' over cost of living Sky News understands Treasury officials now think it will be quite hard to avoid introducing the levy. Advertisement The Times reported that they were being blocked by Mr Johnson's advisers, one of whom told the paper that it would be an "ideologically unconservative thing to do". Downing Street faces a growing clamour to impose a windfall tax on the oil and gas companies that have enjoyed bumper profits as prices soar. … [Read more...] about Windfall tax: Splits between Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak over policy

Ukraine war: Why is Putin’s invasion causing a worldwide food crisis and can anything be done?

May 19, 2022 by news.sky.com

The head of the United Nations has said there is a looming global food crisis because of the impact of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Surging inflation - boosted by higher energy prices as the West disengages from Russian oil and gas supplies - has been exacerbated by rising food prices, leading to fears that many of the world's poorest will not be able to afford to feed themselves . Finance ministers from the G7 met on Thursday to deal with the immediate effects of Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine and also the COVID-19 pandemic, which is also to blame for causing prices to rise. And on Wednesday, officials from among others the US and the World Bank rolled out a multibillion-dollar plan to try to offset the dangers. But what is it that is making the situation so severe? Food The problem stems from the fact that Russia and Ukraine are huge exporters of some of the world's biggest staple foods. More on Food Parents of teenager Natasha Ednan-Laperouse who … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: Why is Putin’s invasion causing a worldwide food crisis and can anything be done?

Foreign spies face life in prison, and all the other key points of the Queen’s Speech

May 11, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

A crackdown on espionage has been unveiled in the Queen’s Speech , with foreign agents suspected of helping hostile states such as Russia and China to face restrictions on their movements and contacts. A new National Security Bill will give the Home Secretary powers to issue civil orders to restrict spies’ ability to move around the country by placing curbs on where they can live, work, study or visit if there is insufficient evidence to prosecute them. Writing in The Telegraph, Priti Patel also said maximum jail sentences for spies would be increased from 14 years to life, alongside new offences to counter cyber attacks, interference in elections and the theft of trade secrets. Ministers have also rejected calls to give civil servants who leak secrets a public interest defence because of the damage it could cause to national security, even if the leaker believed it was justified. Citing the Salisbury poisoning by Russian agents and Chinese targeting of MPs, Ms Patel … [Read more...] about Foreign spies face life in prison, and all the other key points of the Queen’s Speech

Sue Gray demands to name partygate ringleaders

May 19, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Sue Gray is demanding that key players in the partygate scandal are named in her report, after the Metropolitan Police closed its investigation without revealing who had been fined . Ms Gray, the senior civil servant tasked with looking into claims of lockdown-breaking gatherings in Downing Street, is set to publish her full report next week . She is expected to issue scathing criticism of senior political and Civil Service figures, calling into question why illegal social gatherings were allowed to take place. With her report now being finalised, Ms Gray is in discussion with Civil Service human resources and legal teams, as well as trade unions, to determine how explicitly she can point the finger. Numerous figures close to the discussions told The Telegraph that Ms Gray wants to name senior ringleaders at the parties, but fears she will come under pressure to keep some anonymous. One source close to Ms Gray said: “It would be difficult to write [the report] without … [Read more...] about Sue Gray demands to name partygate ringleaders

I can no longer afford to be a police officer, says constable who collared Priti Patel over pay

May 17, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

A police officer has confronted the Home Secretary about pay and conditions in the service, telling her in stark terms she can no longer afford to live on her salary. Detective Constable Vicky Knight, who has served for 23 years with North Wales Police, said she had resorted to visiting a food bank and had to borrow money from her parents each month to help feed her 13-year-old son. The 46-year-old, who is a single parent, went up to Ms Patel after her speech at the Police Federation conference in Manchester, and asked her: “Could you afford to live on £1,200 a month?” Ms Knight said many of her colleagues were becoming desperate and warned that the financial pressure could lead to some officers becoming open to corruption. The Government has imposed a pay freeze on officers for the past two years and the Police Federation claims its members have suffered a 20 per cent real-terms cut to their salaries since the Tories came to power in 2010. The Home Secretary was pressed by … [Read more...] about I can no longer afford to be a police officer, says constable who collared Priti Patel over pay
