EuroMillions winner killed woman after taking eyes off road to pick up dropped teddy

· March 8, 2021 ·

A EuroMillions winner killed a pensioner after taking his eyes off the road to retrieve a teddy bear dropped by his infant son, a court heard today. Matt Topham, 31, who landed a £45m jackpot in 2012, dialled 999 and carried dying Jane Regler, 75, out of her car following the Christmas Day crash. A jury heard in the moments before the collision the dad had been “distracted” by the screaming and crying of his two-year-old son. He told police how he turned around for ‘up to three seconds’ while trying to locate the teddy in a rear footwell. Topham, who was driving a BMW X6, admits causing Jane’s death by careless driving but denies two other offences. Part of his police interview was read out during his trial today. Topham said he was reversing out of a relative’s drive when his eldest son - aged five - told him his younger brother had “dropped his teddy”. Topham added: “I initially ignored that then the youngest started to scream and cry.” He said at this point he “put … [Read more...] about EuroMillions winner killed woman after taking eyes off road to pick up dropped teddy

Women’s Bundesliga roundup: Bayer Leverkusen on the march

· January 8, 2021 ·

Bayer Leverkusen finally on the right path The women's Bundesliga table isn't always the most surprising; most of the time, it's the same teams in the title race. But this week, it's a little different, with Bayer Leverkusen sitting fourth with 23 points after 14 games. This weekend, the team secured a dominant and impressive 4-2 victory over Turbine Potsdam, thanks in part to a hat trick from top scorer Milena Nikolic, who now has 10 goals in 13 games. Bayer Leverkusen may be a big name in men's football, but the women's team has often failed to unleash its full potential in the past. Introduced back in 2008 after taking over nearby sports club TuS Köln, Leverkusen's women have only been established in the Bundesliga since 2018, albeit usually in a relegation battle rather than challenging at the top. But they are aiming higher now, with coach Achim Feifel stating recently that their goal is sixth place. So, what's changed? First, most of their key players have remained at … [Read more...] about Women’s Bundesliga roundup: Bayer Leverkusen on the march

Champions League: Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla on opposite trajectories

· January 8, 2021 ·

Three weeks is a long time in football. Before their Champions League last-16 first leg against Borussia Dortmund on February 17 , Sevilla were riding the crest of a wave with nine straight wins and seven clean sheets in a row. Since then, they've lost three of their last four games and fallen out of the La Liga title race. Dortmund, meanwhile, appear to have turned a corner. Marco Rose has been announced as their next coach and, with the exception of last weekend's 4-2 defeat in Munich , the team are on the rise again. The turning point for both teams was that fraught night in Andalusia. But not so fast. Dortmund have failed to get beyond the last-16 of the Champions League since 2017, when they lost to Monaco under the shadow of the terrorist attack on their team bus . Last season, they beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 in the first leg, only to let it slip in the second. Interim Dortmund coach Edin Terzic is keen to avoid a repeat and knows that a big performance is … [Read more...] about Champions League: Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla on opposite trajectories

‘Nurses aren’t only people Boris Johnson has trampled on – he’s his own worst enemy’

· March 7, 2021 ·

Nurses aren’t the only people to be trampled on by Boris Johnson with his insulting one per cent slap for carers. Bus drivers in Greater Manchester are taking strike action because the Government permits employers to fire and rehire workers on lower pay and inferior terms. British Gas, British Airways, Heathrow Airport and coffee maker Douwe Egberts are – with public transport operator Go North West, – on a worryingly list of companies accused of exploiting coronavirus to ride roughshod over folk. The Prime Minister also freezing the pay of council staff, firefighters the armed forces and the police, shows workers in both the public and private sectors face a common enemy – him. What is your view? Have your say in the comments section And the people of Britain have a united cause with the world’s poorest when even Tories warn hundreds of thousands will starve to death as a result of Johnson’s £4billion aid slash. Chiding Keir Starmer at Prime Minister’s Questions … [Read more...] about ‘Nurses aren’t only people Boris Johnson has trampled on – he’s his own worst enemy’

COVID-19: Boris Johnson hails ’emotional’ return of schools – but repeats warning on target dates for easing lockdown

· March 8, 2021 ·

Boris Johnson has hailed the return of schools across England as a "big" and "emotional" day - but warned it will impact on the spread of coronavirus and there is no guarantee the country will reopen on the target dates set out. Speaking at a news conference in Downing Street, the prime minister said that it is "more vital than ever to follow the rules" so that the roadmap to easing lockdown can continue as planned. Mr Johnson said the government would be "driven by data not dates" when deciding whether to remove more restrictions in the coming weeks ahead of the next planned date of 29 March. Follow live COVID-19 updates from the UK and around the world First lockdown restrictions lifted in England today - what are you now allowed to do? Asked whether encouraging data from recent days - including daily deaths dropping below 100 - might tempt him to move forward some of his targets, he said: "We've got to remain prudent - the whole point of this … [Read more...] about COVID-19: Boris Johnson hails ’emotional’ return of schools – but repeats warning on target dates for easing lockdown
