Eighteen of 21 people making up the Fylde Coast Health and Social Care Career Academy’s first cohort of students have been given jobs at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. The previously unemployed group, referred to the six-week academy by the Jobcentre, were given entry level health skills, and were all interviewed for positions of health care assistant.One, Pauline Winder, 41, from Layton, said: “I had worked in care for lots of companies and always wanted to get into the NHS but could never do it because of my family commitments. Patients choosing not to attend their appointments is contributing to Blackpool Victoria Hospital (BVH) failing to meet targets for the treatment of cancer patients. Available to view in the mezzanine, by the main entrance, from 10am until 3pm this week, the snapshot into a bygone era provides a reminder of just how advanced modern medicine now is.The exhibition is being held in the run-up to the NHS’s 70th anniversary on Thursday, with a series of events held at the Whinney Heys Road hospital to celebrate.The biggest of which will be a street party held on the day itself. Because between 10am and 11am is the time when most new mums give birth at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, new figures have revealed.A total of 1,347 babies were born at the Vic between 10am and 11am from January 1 2011 to December 31, 2017.Other peak periods include 9am-10am, 11am to noon and noon to 1pm - times when planned C-section births tend to take place.A total of 22,060 children were born at the Vic during this seven-year period and comes after a survey by the University College London showed most spontaneous births in the UK happened between 1am and 7am.Since the 1950s, patterns of birth have changed because of rising rates of intervention, such as C-sections and inductions.Sean O’Sullivan, from the Royal College of Midwives, said the research would help maternity services to organise their staffing rotas but individual services would also need to look at … [Read more...] about REVEALED: What is the peak time for babies to be born at Blackpool Victoria Hospital?
Hospital bosses are poised to take out an unsecured £27m loan from Blackpool Council. It comes barely a year after councillors agreed to lend the local NHS £9.2m, using the multi-storey car park at Blackpool Victoria Hospital as surety. If approved next week, the latest request from Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust would see it able to borrow almost three times that amount. However no formal deal has yet been reached. Council papers reveal the money would be used to cut the amount the trust spends paying off existing debt.
