A “significant” number of patients at Blackpool Victoria Hospital may have been exposed to monkeypox after a health worker became the third person in England to be diagnosed with the tropical disease. The unidentified medic is believed to have caught the virus from a patient, who was diagnosed, quarantined, and transferred to a specialist unit in Liverpool earlier this month after a trip to Nigeria. It means two of the three UK cases of monkeypox were on the Fylde coast. The first was a Nigerian staying at a naval base in Cornwall.Public Health England yesterday confirmed the NHS worker was involved in the care of the infected patient before they were diagnosed, and said: “We are adopting a highly precautionary approach to minimise the risk of additional cases, and are tracing anyone who had contact with this individual during the 24 hours before they noticed a rash.”A spokesman did not say how many patients have been contacted, or which department the medic, … [Read more...] about Monkeypox scare as Blackpool Victoria Hospital staff vaccinated

0 Have your say Hospital bosses today promised patient records are not at risk of being lost after a video emerged of thousands of files stored in a former operating theatre. The footage, posted on social media and shared with The Gazette, shows racks of files stacked up in the former ‘anaesthetic room operating theatre 9’ at the Vic. While most of it appears in order, the footage shows some files lined up on the floor, next to theatre taps and in boxes behind doors – sparking potential health and safety and fire safety issues. Vic bosses today said they are in the process of digitising the thousands of patient notes stored at the hospital to help reduce the need to keep physical records.Tim Bennett, deputy chief executive at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, (inset) said: “The Trust stores in excess of 450,000 sets of patient notes and deals with more than 400,000 appointments every year. Patients choosing not to attend their appointments is contributing to Blackpool Victoria Hospital (BVH) failing to meet targets for the treatment of cancer patients. Cancer patients should be treated at hospital within 62 days of being diagnosed.Janet Barnsley, interim director of planned care at BVH, said in some instances it was the complexity of the cases which led to delays, but in others it was due to “patients choosing not to come in.”She told a public board meeting of the Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust: “We offer a date within the waiting time and they choose not to take it.”Trust chairman Pearse Butler said: “All the evidence is that quick diagnosis and treatment is the key, and then we have members of the public who say ‘wait a bit longer.’”Although work was being done in community health to encourage people to take up their appointments, it was suggested deprivation could play a part in people opting … [Read more...] about Fear factor for cancer no-shows at Blackpool Victoria Hospital?

Hospital bosses are poised to take out an unsecured £27m loan from Blackpool Council. It comes barely a year after councillors agreed to lend the local NHS £9.2m, using the multi-storey car park at Blackpool Victoria Hospital as surety. If approved next week, the latest request from Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust would see it able to borrow almost three times that amount. However no formal deal has yet been reached. Council papers reveal the money would be used to cut the amount the trust spends paying off existing debt. They add: “In the New Year the Council was once again approached by the Foundation Trust about a further loan for the purposes of restructuring an existing loan that had been taken out with the Foundation Trust Finance Facility back in 2009 “Unlike the previous loan this one would be unsecured as there are insufficient non-operational assets to secure against and the Foundation Trust is not legally … [Read more...] about Blackpool Victoria Hospital bosses ask for £27m loan from council
