The World Food Programme is warning of an impending catastrophic failure in food supply chains caused by Russia's blockade of Ukrainian Black Sea ports. Besieged Ukraine is often described world's bread basket. But now ships can't get out of the ports. Speaking at the Quad summit held together with the leaders of Japan, Australia, and India, US president Joe Biden said the war is a global issue. "The global food crisis is made worse by Russia blocking Ukraine from exporting its millions of tons of grain," he said. The world, he said, was at a “transformative moment” and the Russia-Ukraine war was not only a European but a global issue: "As long as Russia continues the war, the United States will work with our partners to help lead a global response, because it can affect all parts of the world." The UK is in discussion with allies about sending warships to the Black Sea to protect freight ships conveying Ukrainian grain overseas, in what it called a “coalition … [Read more...] about World Food Programme warns of mass starvation due to Russian blockade of Black Sea ports

Majority of Black women experienced ‘scalp burns or hair loss’ from using relaxer
Research released today by feminist campaign group Level Up reveals that 95.5% of Black British women do not trust big beauty brands to sell them safe products. Last year, the campaign group launched the #NoMoreLyes petition to try to halt the sale of hair relaxers that contain lye (sodium hydroxide) – a harsh chemical used in drain unblockers, are connected to a range of health problems among Black British women including scalp burns, hair loss and breast cancer . The petition followed the release of damning research by Oxford University that found a link between long-term use of hair relaxers containing lye and a 30% increased risk of breast cancer for Black women . Now, a year on, it seems there is still little trust in the beauty industry among Black women. The latest study, which surveyed 1,024 Black British women aged 25-44, sought to understand Black British women’s experiences of hair relaxers. The results found that that 2 in 3 (63%) Black British … [Read more...] about Majority of Black women experienced ‘scalp burns or hair loss’ from using relaxer

Southeastern trains boss: ‘From £2bn in red we’re now £200m in the black’
When one of the most influential voices on the railways attacked Southeastern’s services as “sh*t, awful”, and “like the wild west” in 2015, boss David Statham’s first thought was not for the 675,000 people that use his trains each day; but for his staff. Sir Peter Hendy, the then Transport for London chief and current Network Rail chairman, hadn’t pulled his punches in an interview with Management Today . He continued: “Every now and then some people who look like the Gestapo get on and fine everyone they can. It doesn’t improve your day, does it?” Four years later and the remarks are still a sore point. “We’ve got 4,500 people; they do all sorts of jobs every single day. It was really important that those people know that we value them,” he says. “It was important to reassure our people that we cared about them.” As managing director of Southeastern, Statham is in charge of one of Britain’s biggest rail franchises, running more than 2,000 services a day from Kent and … [Read more...] about Southeastern trains boss: ‘From £2bn in red we’re now £200m in the black’

“Petty and childish”: Man dragged for intervening in wife’s job interviews
Members of a popular internet forum offered stern advice to one woman who said her husband has ruined every job interview she's had over the last five months. In a viral Reddit post published on r/AmITheA**hole, Redditor u/the54756 (otherwise referred to as the original poster, or OP) said she has been diligently looking for a new job but detailed the questionable manner in which her partner has made finding one nearly impossible. Titled, "[Am I the a**hole] for locking the door to prevent my husband from getting involved in my job interview?" the post has received nearly 11,000 votes and 1,400 comments in the last seven hours. Beginning with the explanation that her husband works a "high-paying" job and has repeatedly encouraged her to simply stay at home, the original poster said she refused his offer and embarked on a months-long job search. However, after securing multiple interviews with multiple different employers, the original poster said she remains jobless and … [Read more...] about “Petty and childish”: Man dragged for intervening in wife’s job interviews
Sadiq Khan gives in to unions over taxi fare rises
Sadiq Khan has conceded to trade union demands by agreeing to a 5.5pc increase in London taxi fares. The mayor sanctioned the increase to halt an exodus of drivers leaving the capital’s roads, despite Londoners facing a cost-of-living crisis as inflation takes off . The rise is considerably more than the 4pc initially proposed by City Hall, and in line with the demands of the London Cab Drivers Club, Licensed Taxi Drivers Association, the RMT, Unite and the United Cabbies Group. It is the first time fares have been increased for two years. The new fares will be in force from Apr 30. The minimum will rise 60p to £3.80 and meters will “tick over” more quickly. Meanwhile, a surcharge for Heathrow passengers will increase by 80p to £3.60 with drivers adding £5.20 for those entering the airport's drop-off zone. The number of black cabs in the capital slumped to its lowest level for almost four decades as drivers struggled to make ends meet during the pandemic.
