The Russian Defense Ministry has claimed that Russian forces have "liberated" all of Ukraine's Luhansk region. The ministry on Sunday said Russian forces had captured Lysychansk, the last major Ukrainian-held city in Ukraine's Luhansk province. Russia's defense minister Sergei Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin that Russia's troops and members of a local separatist militia "have established full control over Lysychansk and some nearby settlements," according to a post on the ministry's Telegram channel. "The total area of the territories liberated over the past day amounted to 182 square kilometers," the post said. Control of Lysychansk would bring Moscow closer to its stated goal of seizing all of Ukraine's Donbas region. Ukraine's military did not immediately provide a response, but on Saturday, Ukrainian authorities had said that Lysychansk remained under Ukrainian control. Early on Sunday, Luhansk governor Serhiy Haidai said Russian forces were gaining a … [Read more...] about Moscow claims control over Luhansk region as missiles hit border towns

Prisoners being trained up as football referees to help stop cons re-offending
Prisoners are being trained up as football referees with eleven cons passing the FA’s Level 7 course in the past year, which allows them to take charge in junior amateur leagues, with Level 1 officials in control of Premier League games. A report by inspectors from the Independent Monitoring Board revealed details of the course in a new report. The scheme, which normally costs £135, states that it equips participants with the "skills and knowledge" to referee. The lags must complete five modules, including watching videos of matches, and learn the rules of the beautiful game. The criminals, at HMP Highpoint, a 1,300-capacity jail in Suffolk, also discovered how to “built a rapport” with players and coaches. With the Tories in turmoil, steel helps Boris Johnson show his mettle
Boris Johnson’s move to extend tariffs on imported steel by two years — a probable breach of World Trade Organisation rules — was welcomed by protectionist MPs from both sides of the political aisle. Industry also predictably lauded the decision, saying it will be protected from artificially cheap imports. Much like fishing, steel carries with it a disproportionate amount of political focus compared to its size — in 2020 the £2bn it contributed to the economy was the equivalent of just 0.1pc of total economic output and 1.2pc of manufacturing. But as the industry likes to point out: everything is made of steel. The metal goes into cars, aircraft, new buildings and the machinery that forms almost everything else. Without it, steel insiders say the logic of having a manufacturing industry in the UK would be considerably weaker — a fact that will not be lost on the Prime Minister. The move was pegged as an effort to “protect the steel sector”, Trade Secretary Anne-Marie … [Read more...] about With the Tories in turmoil, steel helps Boris Johnson show his mettle
Guest opinion: The SCOTUS decision is wrong: What about us?
With all the progress we make in this country, there are always going to be people who want to actively destroy the nation. These people have no desire to take actions that better serve everyone. Instead, they prefer to block out sound judgment to serve values they want to impose on others. So, I was angry and deeply disappointed but not surprised when the court ruled. What about the people who were raped, experienced incest, or what if they just simply don’t want a kid? What happened to giving people grace when they make a mistake? I’m worried about what this type of regression of progress can lead to. If the right to a person’s body can be taken away in the blink of an eye, just imagine what will happen to contraception and birth control. What is going to happen to things like same-sex marriage or mixed marriage? What is going to happen to freedom of speech? Some people may think I’m being over dramatic, but it’s simply just looking at the bigger picture and how one bad decision … [Read more...] about Guest opinion: The SCOTUS decision is wrong: What about us?
I’m on a mission to make sure every new parent regularly measures their baby’s head
Watching Harry scooting up and down our street with his best friend Bella is magical. You would never guess that the first year of Harry’s life was a whirlwind of blue-light emergencies, brain surgeries, and unimaginable fear. You would never think that, under his mop of unruly blonde hair is a shunt – a device which drains the fluid from his brain, and keeps him alive. Harry is my fourth child, and my pregnancy with him was actually my easiest. I had mild gestational diabetes (GD), which was controlled by diet, but other than that I actually glowed. While I was pregnant, I was scanned every four weeks from 20 weeks onwards, which is common for pregnant people with GD. At 36 weeks, my husband and I walked into the scan room. We were calm, expecting a routine appointment. However, about five minutes in, the sonographer went quiet. She then said she needed to get someone else, so we waited. Another lady came in, said nothing and then, after what felt like forever, … [Read more...] about I’m on a mission to make sure every new parent regularly measures their baby’s head
Doctors told me I was ‘just fat’ – my serious medical condition was missed
As soon as I got my lipoedema diagnosis last year, tears rolled down my cheeks. For years, doctors told me that I was ‘just fat’. But finally a medical professional had confirmed my disproportionately large legs were a medical condition – an extremely painful chronic disease that causes fibrotic fat to accumulate in the lower part of the body, over which the patient has very little to zero control. It was the validation I’d waited nearly 30 years to receive. When I was 12 years old, I began noticing distinct changes in my body. I quit wearing shorts or swimsuits and avoided all activities where I was expected to show my legs. Whenever I looked at them, I felt deeply ashamed and disgusted with myself. By age 14, I was so ashamed of my big legs that I convinced my parents to let me have a free consultation with a plastic surgeon. Back then, I was 5 foot 6 inches (170cm) tall and weighed roughly 135 pounds (61kg), the majority of which were within my legs. I was so … [Read more...] about Doctors told me I was ‘just fat’ – my serious medical condition was missed
