The campaign was championed by footballer Marcus Rashford, who called on people to "unite" to protect the most vulnerable children. A Labour motion in the Commons to extend the scheme over holidays until Easter 2021 was defeated, on Wednesday. Doncaster's mayor Ros Jones said it was "the right thing to do". Following the defeat in the Commons, restaurants, cafes, takeaways and other food venues from across the country have shared offers of free meals for children over half term. ‘We’re actually really nice people’: Maligned Pāpāmoa freedom campers say they’re trying to combat cost of living
Pāpāmoa residents are frustrated by freedom campers overstaying in a beachside reserve carpark. The campers are taking up most of the available parking space at the Taylor Reserve carpark in Pāpāmoa East, according to resident Jayne Darby. Darby said the campers leave their belongings around which included car tyres, timber and bongs for drug smoking.Darby regularly uses the carpark when walking her dog and said on her last visit there were eight vehicles using the carpark for camping. It comes after a motion to extend free school meals over holidays during the Covid-19 pandemic was rejected by MPs. The Manchester United striker had called on people to "unite" to protect the most vulnerable children. Fish and chip shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes are among the hospitality venues to offer free meals . A growing number of councils across England have also pledged to provide food vouchers over half term . Labour-led authorities in Birmingham, Liverpool, Sheffield, Hammersmith & Fulham and Doncaster are among those agreeing to fund their own schemes. After captain Liam Cooper revealed the players' donation, the club said it would stand "united" to help feed vulnerable children. It comes after a Labour bid to extend free school meals was rejected by MPs. The government said it had already introduced more effective measures to support families. Hull public health boss gives face mask advice as Covid cases rise

James Crick, public health consultant for Hull City Council, said the rise, though expected, is concerning. He said he supported the wearing of face coverings in enclosed spaces. Mr Crick said: "Given the rising number of cases, it's absolutely reasonable for people to do so." Chief Inspector of Schools Sir Michael Wilshaw says there is a serious and growing threat to the safety of children. Inspectors have found three unregistered schools operating in Birmingham in recent weeks. The government says it is taking robust steps against unregistered schools. Analysis : From BBC education editor Branwen Jeffreys Anywhere that offers more than 20 hours a week of teaching is legally obliged to be registered as a school. The three schools inspected by Ofsted had not met this requirement to register. It is likely the children being sent to some of the centres breaching that threshold are registered as home-educated. Wolverhampton South West MP Stuart Anderson's constituency office has also been vandalised, he said. Over the weekend, paper plates covered in messages saying he "voted against meals for hungry children" were put up at the office, the Tory MP said.
