Technopolis 20 Cultural Centre in Paphos is the centre of attention when it comes to a blend of cultural events. It puts on exhibitions, workshops, plays on occasion and music events, music events above all. This week the cultural centre will continue on its quest to bring some of the best musical performances on the island with a chamber music concert by musicians of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra (CSO) on Saturday, followed by a jazz concert on Sunday. The chamber music concert, under the name Mozart and the 20th Century, promises to be one of the very best concerts the orchestra has ever been part of. What makes us so sure that it will truly be a concert to remember is that Jens George Bachman – Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the CSO – will take to the piano while Wolfgang Schroeder will accompany him on violin. These two musicians will bring to life the works of two of the best-known composers of their respective timelines: from the second half of the 18th … [Read more...] about Chamber and jazz concerts at Technopolis

Pictures: Adrian Murray FOR the lucky ones in the Wetherby area who love jazz, Saturday night hits just the right note. There’s live music without fail at Jazz in the Spa, which has been described as one of the best jazz club venues in the country. Visiting bands of high repute sing its praises and so do those of us who spend our Saturday nights there. We run out of superlatives describing them: “Tremendous music, wonderful value, excellent” and so on. It’s hard to believe that we have volunteers to thank for attracting top bands to this unlikely venue. For the trustees’ hall at Boston Spa is transformed for these so special Saturday night sessions. Les Brown, Ken Waller and Tim Mallinson worked wonders to save our jazz club when it became homeless, after we’d been told there was no longer room at the inn. The Crown needed the space. The future looked bleak until a germ of an idea took root. What about trying for the trustees hall, hub of village … [Read more...] about Enjoying Saturday nights and all that jazz
Andy Summers first picked up a camera during his touring days with The Police. He tells Ed Power about his love of photography and his current exhibition at UCC.Andy Summers is one of rock music’s most influential guitarists. On Police hits such as ‘Every Breath You Take’ and ‘Message In A Bottle’, he combined urgency and rawness with a determination to rise above the spit and fury of the then-dominant punk scene. It was Summers who brought sophistication to The Police’s early 1980s reign at the top of the charts, adding nuance to Sting’s gnarled love songs, with his background in jazz and blues. The public was reminded of Summers’ importance when The Police reformed a decade ago. Clocking in with two-and-a-half-hour sets each evening — including an October 2007 sell-out at Croke Park — Summers was as much the star of the show as Sting. They were the classic musical odd couple: The tall-haired frontman … [Read more...] about The Police guitarist Andy Summers: Still life beyond the band
