England manager Gareth Southgate has long been be familiar with the threat posed by some of the supreme talents in the the Belgium squad such as Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne. Yet the Red Devils have a less well-known weapon at their disposal for tonight’s World Cup match in Kaliningrad, effectively a shoot-out for top spot in Group G: artificial intelligence technology designed to identify their opponents’ weaknesses. Belgium, coached by Roberto Martinez, have been using the services of Dutch football intelligence company SciSports for the last five months, including at the tournament in Russia, in a bid to get an edge on their rivals for the trophy. “We’re helping them to analyse their opponents based on data,” SciSports founder and chief executive Giels Brouwer told City A.M. “We’re providing their technical staff with strengths, weaknesses of the teams they’re going to face.” That might sound like standard fare … [Read more...] about Deep learning: Belgium’s secret weapon for England’s World Cup group decider
I usually think you shouldn't sign players on the back of their World Cup performances because they can flatter to deceive. So, I am not going to get carried away by new Stoke midfielder Etebo, although I have to say he has been very impressive. Stoke haven't actually signed him on the back of his World Cup performances - they got in there early to do a deal in before the competition. I bet they are delighted they did because, despite my warning at the top of this column, I am one or two other clubs would love to sigh him and his value has risen from the deal for just over £6m City agreed with Portuguese side Feirense. In fact, Stoke's hierachy and fans must have been rubbing their hands watching him against Argentina the other night when he was excellent. His performance was like N'Golo Kante in the way he was everywhere winning the ball. he looked decent in possession too - he's not just a worker bee, he could pick a pass. I feel Stoke have missed a Glenn Whelan type in their … [Read more...] about Etebo’s World Cup performance is huge plus for Stoke City’s recruitment
THE USA might not be heading to Russia 2018 - but they will have two referees on football's biggest stage. Both Mark Geiger and Jair Marrufo have been selected to officiate at the World Cup by Fifa. And for many, former maths teacher Geiger will be a familiar face.Who is Mark Geiger? A REGULAR in the MLS, Geiger began his career in the lower-leagues back in 2002. He made his bow in American's top division in 2004 and became Fifa listed just four years later, taking charge of internationals and matches around the continent. In 2011 he was the MLS referee of the year and a 12 months later was selected as as one of 16 referees to officiate at the 2012 Olympics in London. A maths teacher in New Jersey, Geiger gave up his teaching career to pursue refereeing and has now reached the very highest level. He will go to the World Cup in Russia and took charge of numerous games in last year's Confederations Cup, which gave him valuable experience with the VAR system in use this … [Read more...] about Who is South Korea vs Germany referee Mark Geiger, and how many World Cups has American refereed at?
We all know a lucky punter or two worth listening to when it comes to predicting football results. But The Simpsons ? Could Homer and Co really have predicted an unlikely 2018 World Cup Final? Well it would appear that the predictive powers of the cartoon favourite could be coming to the fore once again with bookies, William Hill, reporting a massive gamble on a Mexico-Portugal final next month. Not suffice with predicting 200/1 shot Donald Trump would become President back in 2000, a result caused Hills to pay out £3.8m in 2016, the Simpsons archives have thrown up another which has punters clamouring to fill their boots. A 1997 episode saw the show predict that very outcome and Hills are facing such a massive payout that the odds have been cut from a biggest price of 500/1 to 33/1. You can watch the clip in the player above. William Hill alone have liabilities of £670,000 if Portugal do face Mexico in the final. And one customer from Lincolnshire stands to win a massive … [Read more...] about Have The Simpsons correctly predicted the final of the 2018 World Cup?
