I’ve driven the Lexus LC Convertible – here’s why it’s the best car that nobody buys
THIS is the Lexus LC500 Convertible and you've probably never seen one before. That's because despite it being one of the best open-tops currently on sale in Britain, Lexus only managed to sell 64 of them last year. And that was a good year - in 2020 it only sold 47. These figures include the hard-top LC too, so it doesn't look good for this Convertible. Admittedly there are a few things holding it back; unlike the hard-top LC the LC Convertible doesn't come with a hybrid engine, just a thumping great 5.0-litre V8. It's also the thick end of £100,000. Now, that sounds a lot, and it is a lot. But a Porsche 911 Cabriolet is just as expensive and sells by the bucket load and a Mercedes-AMG SL costs more while offering much the same thing. Most read in Motors SEEING RED Driver's outrageous attempt to avoid a red has everyone saying the same thing BACKFIRED I let a stranger park on my drive 8 months ago - now he won't move … [Read more...] about I’ve driven the Lexus LC Convertible – here’s why it’s the best car that nobody buys
Four ways Nadhim Zahawi may try to boost the economy
Published 7 minutes ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Following the shock resignation of former Chancellor Rishi Sunak, his replacement Nadhim Zahawi has said he and Prime Minister Boris Johnson want to "rebuild the economy" and get soaring inflation under control. Mr Zahawi said "nothing is off the table" in terms of cutting taxes. What are some of the options open to the new Chancellor to make good on those plans? 1. Cut VAT Mr Zahawi has said he wants to do two things: cut taxes and "bear down" on inflation. Those are not usually happy bedfellows. Cutting taxes puts more money into the economy, which drives prices up - so how can he walk this line? A temporary cut in VAT - the tax paid when buying goods and services - from 20% to 17.5%, say, would lower the price of goods and services in the basket used to calculate inflation - taxes would get cut, and … [Read more...] about Four ways Nadhim Zahawi may try to boost the economy
UK gov to force tech firms to scan Brits’ private messages for child abuse images
Tech companies could soon be forced to scan UK citizens' private phones and messages for child sexual abuse material. Oasis megafan makes £65,000 by selling blades of grass from Liam Gallagher gig on eBay
An Oasis megafan may get a supersonic payout after a few blades of grass he collected from a Liam Gallagher gig reached over £65,000 on eBay . David Watson, 35, said he originally put the listing up as a “joke” while “hungover” after going to the former Oasis frontman’s sell-out show at Knebworth in Hertfordshire on Saturday. Three days later, the innocuous item - with a £5 starting price - had gained more than 100 bids and reached an eye-watering figure in the tens of thousands of pounds. The graphic designer said that he plans to buy a “bouncy castle business” if he receives the money for the grass, which he collected close to the concert’s main stage. But he’s not “confident” the final winner will shell out for the grass – and said he would instead settle for a shout from his hero, Liam. At the time of writing, the blade of grass was sitting at £65,100, plus 95p postage. The auction still has over four days left to run and has already received 114 bids. The blade … [Read more...] about Oasis megafan makes £65,000 by selling blades of grass from Liam Gallagher gig on eBay
Prue Leith: NHS can serve ‘delicious’ food on a budget
Published 26 October 2020 comments Comments Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Food served around the clock and digital menus are among the recommendations in a review of hospital meals led by celebrity chef Prue Leith. It is possible to serve "delicious, nutritious" food on a budget, the Great British Bake Off judge said. The review was launched after a deadly outbreak of listeriosis in hospitals last year was linked to pre-packaged sandwiches and salads. Boris Johnson said it was "therapeutic" for patients to have good food. A group of advisers, tasked with reviewing hospital food, set out ways NHS trusts can prioritise food safety and provide healthier meals. Recommendations included upgrading kitchens to provide 24/7 service that caters for a variety of needs, from new mothers in a maternity ward, to patients hungry after a long fast due to … [Read more...] about Prue Leith: NHS can serve ‘delicious’ food on a budget
British heavyweight bouts that gripped the world
Anthony Joshua's stunning defeat of Wladimir Klitschko has been lauded as one of Britain's best ever boxing matches. As talk turns to a possible rematch between the pair , Sky News takes a look at other British heavyweight bouts which gripped the world. :: Henry Cooper v Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay) - June 1963 Facing up against "The Greatest" at Wembley Stadium, Henry Cooper looked to defeat the odds and stop the rise of the most explosive heavyweight in the world. Ali was considered the overwhelming favourite and went into the fight in a characteristically confident mood, predicting "Cooper shall go in five". Advertisement But the world held its breath as Ali was floored with a stunning left hook in the fourth round, a blow he later said was so hard "my ancestors in Africa felt it". The bell went as Ali hit the canvas, and in a violation of the rules the American's trainer guided him back into the corner and attempted to rouse him with … [Read more...] about British heavyweight bouts that gripped the world
