brexit countdown_bg Created with Sketch. STUART ROSE former chairman of Marks & Spencer who ran the Remain in Europe campaign in 2016: It's no secret I was a Remainer. I'm still a Remainer but I respect the democratic process. I am also a pragmatist and a realist. I recognise that it is time for us to move on and the deal the Prime Minister has got is an opportunity for us to do that. I am involved in the food, clothing and automobile industries so I have some perspective on how damaging the lack of clarity has been. Looking through the lens of business, we need to break this log jam. Is this deal perfection? No. Is it better than what we had before? Yes. Does it deserve serious attention? Yes. Do I believe 90 per cent of business people would back it? Absolutely. Why? Without a deal, there is so much uncertainty, so much lack of confidence. It is causing real harm to the economy and the longer it goes on, the worse it will get. People are not putting their hands in their … [Read more...] about Do the deal today, says former Remain campaign chief STUART ROSE as he insists ‘it is time to move on’

Boris Johnson faces a vote on his Brexit deal blocked again today - despite mounting signs that the government has the numbers to win. Commons Speaker John Bercow looks set to infuriate ministers by refusing to allow a showdown later. Mr Bercow branded the idea of a re-run 'irregular' over the weekend, after Remainer MPs denied the PM approval for his deal and forced him to ask the EU for an extension. But a formal ruling against the vote this afternoon could cause a huge meltdown - with many Tories accusing the Speaker of twisting the rules to try to stop Brexit. It would again delay the moment of truth on Mr Johnson's deal, with legislation expected to be brought forward tomorrow. The premier's chances of getting the implementation law through in time for the UK to leave the EU by his 'do or die' date of October 31 are likely to hang on whether he can get support for a 'programme motion' - which will dictate a tight schedule for the stages in Parliament. Usually it takes … [Read more...] about Will John Bercow BLOCK new vote on PM’s Brexit deal? Imagine the satisfaction of driving your environmentally friendly electric car for 1,500 miles without having to stop to recharge the battery – a distance more than four times as far as the best and most expensive model currently on the road. Under the bonnet is a revolutionary new type of battery which, unlike those used in conventional electric cars, can also power buses, huge lorries and even aircraft. What’s more, it’s far simpler and cheaper to make than the batteries currently in use in millions of electric vehicles around the world – and, unlike them, it can easily be recycled. This might sound like a science-fiction fantasy. But it’s not. Last Friday, the battery’s inventor, British engineer and former Royal Navy officer Trevor Jackson, signed a multi-million-pound deal to start manufacturing the device on a large scale in the UK. The father-of-eight battery inventor engineer, Trevor Jackson, 58 from Tavistock, Devon, who has signed a … [Read more...] about Father-of-eight invents an electric car battery in a tiny Cornish workshop which will take drivers 1,500 miles without needing to charge it
Top story: PM lunges for border in Irish sea Hello, I’m Warren Murray – thanks for giving the Briefing your time this morning. Boris Johnson may be on the brink of reaching a Brexit deal with negotiating teams said to have agreed in principle that there will be a customs border down the Irish Sea. Amid the rush to find a deal for the EU27 leaders to sign off at Thursday’s European council summit, a draft text may be published on Wednesday if Downing Street gives the final green light, according to senior EU and British sources. The prime minister will brief his cabinet at 4pm before addressing a meeting of the Tory 1922 Committee. We are covering all the developments live. If a deal does emerge, Johnson would probably try to pass it through parliament very quickly on a historic Saturday sitting. The PM will need almost all Conservatives, most of the former Tories from whom he withdrew the whip, and either the DUP or a bloc of about a dozen Labour MPs to get it through … [Read more...] about Wednesday briefing: Has Johnson got a deal for EU?
