On the surface, you could argue not much has changed at Leicester City in the last five years. In 2016, the club’s ambitions relied heavily on the goals and fitness of Jamie Vardy. Fast-forward to 2021, and it’s the same again. Before going further, I can imagine his manager (and my former boss) Brendan Rodgers will be rolling his eyes if he reads that. There is more to Leicester’s bid to qualify for the Champions League than their striker, as there was when Claudio Ranieri led them to an improbable Premier League title. Nevertheless, Leicester would not have won the league without their number nine, and recent results suggest they will not finish in the top four without him. That’s not intended to read as a criticism of the rest of the team. It is a tribute to Vardy’s ongoing and irreplaceable threat. Since beating Chelsea 2-0 on Jan 19, Vardy has not started the last four Premier League games. His side has won only once in the league during his recovery from a hernia … [Read more...] about Jamie Vardy might be English football’s greatest ever signing – no wonder Leicester still rely on him

Wayne Rooney – a normal bloke who was freakishly good at football
The lopsided structure of the film fits its subject. Wayne Rooney made his Everton debut in 2002, when Tony Blair was Prime Minister, Pierce Brosnan was James Bond, and Emma Raducanu had yet to be born. Today, it is only 13 months since Rooney retired from playing. Yet Rooney focuses on the years from 2002, when he burst on to the scene, through Euro 2004, when it looked as if England had the best player in the world, to a wretched 2006 World Cup, when the decline had already begun. The Amazon Prime Video biopic clocks in at 104 minutes, but it is more than an hour before Wazza has scored his first goal for Manchester United, and most of his latter career is squashed in at the end. This is not a criticism of the film: indeed, it functions as an accurate mirror of the most thunderous and yet also strangely unsatisfying of all modern football careers. The numbers speak to an all-time great: United’s top scorer with 253 goals, England’s most prolific scorer with 53, five Premier … [Read more...] about Wayne Rooney – a normal bloke who was freakishly good at football
UK’s Eurovision history: Every UK entry ranked, from worst to best
The Eurovision Song Contest 2022 is underway. This year, the UK's hopes ride on the shoulders of Viking lookalike and TikTok hair metal star Sam Ryder, with his song Space Man . According to our music critic James Hall, Ryder's song is the strongest British entry in years. If a UK win seems unlikely – Ukraine's Kalush Orchestra is, understandably, the bookies' favourite – Ryder should at least escape the feared "nul points" given to last year's entry, James Newman. Or will he? To find out, tune in to BBC One for the Grand Final at 8pm on Saturday May 14. The UK's Eurovision track record has always been contentious. Dodgy double-acts and spurious voting tactics have seen us finish anywhere from first place (last clinched in 1998) to dead last (most recently in 2021). Here, we look back at all 63 past entries to see how they hold up, from the ridiculous to the sublime. 63. Jemini, Cry Baby, 2003 Now notorious for its "nul points" last-place result, every part of this … [Read more...] about UK’s Eurovision history: Every UK entry ranked, from worst to best
Why ‘Locke and Key’ is ending with Season 3 on Netflix
Locke and Key has become the latest in a long line of Netflix shows to come to an end after three seasons. The streamer has announced that the fantasy show is to end with its upcoming Season 3. Co-showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill released a statement that revealed their reasons as to why Locke and Key is ending—a statement that seems to contradict what they have previously said about the show. Season 3 of the show was filmed back to back with the last set of episodes, and is expected on the streamer this year. Why Is 'Locke and Key' Ending? Per Cuse and Averill's statement: "Once we began working on the series, we felt three seasons was the ideal length to bring the story of the Locke family and their Keyhouse adventures to a satisfying conclusion." However, as recently as November 2021, TheGWW.com asked the team whether the show could return for Season 4. Averill said: "We'd love to do many, many seasons of the show. We love the show. The show has many … [Read more...] about Why ‘Locke and Key’ is ending with Season 3 on Netflix
Red Wall voters understand state doesn’t always know best, says Boris Johnson’s policy chief
A casual observer of British politics may have missed that a quiet revolution has taken place in Number 10 , the significance of which has yet to be fully appreciated. Boris Johnson has in recent months replaced his chief of staff , communications director and top civil servant in his private office and scores of other senior advisers in a total overhaul of his inner circle. The shake-up was partly by design – an attempt to draw a line under the “partygate” scandal – and partly a reflection of political weakness and outside demands. It means many of those now by the Prime Minister’s side throughout the day were not there in January. They remain little known or discussed, for now at least. Which leads us to Andrew Griffith. The MP for Arundel and South Downs is by no means a household name, having only entered Parliament in December 2019 election. But this February he was handed one of the most influential roles in Downing Street – director of the Number 10 Policy … [Read more...] about Red Wall voters understand state doesn’t always know best, says Boris Johnson’s policy chief

Buffalo Bills’ Micah Hyde to donate portion of proceeds from charity softball game to support shooting victims
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A day after 10 people were killed and three others injured in a shooting at a Buffalo supermarket, Bills safety Micah Hyde committed to donating a portion of the proceeds from his charity softball game to the families of the victims. Hyde said that the long-planned softball game was almost canceled due to the weekend's events, but that he felt it was important to bring the community together after such a tragedy and do something positive. The attack took place Saturday afternoon when a white 18-year-old man opened fire at a Tops Friendly Markets located in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Buffalo. Authorities have described the act as "racially motivated violent extremism." "I still can't believe it," Hyde said. "But when there's hate in the world, you kind of erase it with love, and coming out here today and showing the community love and love to the youth, love to the community, love to the foundation. I guess that's the way to combat it." A … [Read more...] about Buffalo Bills’ Micah Hyde to donate portion of proceeds from charity softball game to support shooting victims
Brendan Rodgers wants more firepower up front to help out Jamie Vardy if Leicester make Europe
Brendan Rodgers will target more firepower this summer after admitting Leicester will need to strengthen their squad if they qualify for the Champions League. Jamie Vardy is a Premier League goal centurion after scoring twice against Crystal Palace and will lead the line against Arsenal on Tuesday - the club he infamously turned down in 2016. The former England international is on course for this season's Golden Boot and the 33 year old remains an integral part of Rodgers's plans, but Leicester want to add at least one forward ahead of next season. Rodgers is also keen to sign another winger to add further competition in wide areas, with discussions over the summer transfer strategy scheduled with the club’s board for later this month. Ahead of Leicester’s trip to the Emirates, Rodgers confirmed that he is aiming to bring in new recruits to cope with the extra demands of European competition, if they secure a top-four finish. “There’s no doubt we need more options going … [Read more...] about Brendan Rodgers wants more firepower up front to help out Jamie Vardy if Leicester make Europe
