London must power up its post-Brexit tech boom
Over the last few days we have learned that Sir Nick Clegg, the president of global affairs at Meta, is moving back from America to the British capital. Alongside him will be the head of Instagram Adam Mosseri and very soon the head of marketing Alex Schultz as well. At this rate, it might just be simpler to move the whole company over to this side of the Atlantic. When they get here, they certainly won’t be short of internet-savvy neighbours. Alphabet, Apple, and Bloomberg, effectively a tech company dressed up as a media business, are all massively expanding their operations in London. Ironically, while the capital may have voted massively against our departure from the European Union, and staged every kind of demonstration against Brexit imaginable, it doesn’t seem to have stopped London from cementing its position as Europe’s key technology hub. It is racing ahead. And yet in truth, the city needs to turbo-charge its tech ambitions. If we finally get rid of the … [Read more...] about London must power up its post-Brexit tech boom
Author Patricia Nicol reveals a selection of the best books on: Holiday jobs
Do young people still do holiday and weekend jobs? I first went to work, at 15, as ‘a sweets girl’, making puddings such as knickerbocker glories, at a restaurant. My intention had been to save up to go Interrailing, but on a starting salary that I recall as £1.13, raised to £1.76 an hour, I was barely going to be able to reach the next town. Later, I had better-paid Saturday shop jobs, and would do (badly) silver service waitressing gigs. My university holiday jobs included waitressing, bar work, switchboard operating, teaching English as a foreign language to Italian and Greek schoolchildren. And, most bizarrely, dental nursing. British author Patricia Nicol has rounded up a selection of the best books on holiday jobs including Factory Girls by Michelle Gallen and The Summer Job by Lizzy Dent I learned a good deal from these jobs: that education is not the same as intelligence; that, in any workplace, there will always be some kind people determined … [Read more...] about Author Patricia Nicol reveals a selection of the best books on: Holiday jobs
‘He’s your best player’ – Kevin Pietersen urges England not to drop Jason Roy after latest Hundred failure
Kevin Pietersen has backed Jason Roy to rediscover his form and urged England not to drop the struggling opener, calling him the team’s ‘best player’. Roy, who starred in England’s 2019 World Cup win, has endured a poor summer, scoring 197 runs across 11 international innings. The 32-year-old has also made a subdued start to The Hundred, scoring ten runs in two games and falling for a first-ball duck in Oval Invincibles’ opening fixture against London Spirit. However, despite his lean run of form, Roy has received public support from England legend Pietersen, who says he should keep his place in the team for the T20 World Cup later in the year. ‘Jason is 32 and what I’m sick and tired of in this country is people getting written off at such a young age,’ Pietersen told Sky Sports. ‘Jason is a World Cup winner, he’s done an unbelievable job for Eoin Morgan [England’s former white-ball captain]. He was told by Eoin, like the whole team, to go and smack the ball. … [Read more...] about ‘He’s your best player’ – Kevin Pietersen urges England not to drop Jason Roy after latest Hundred failure
Heatwave death toll climbs to 13 as Britain swelters in scorching temperatures
At least 13 people have died this month in water-related incidents, as the sweltering UK heat drives more and more to seek refuge in sometimes perilous waters. Those who have come to tragic ends while splashing around in cooling bodies of water in July include victims of a range of ages, with the youngest being a 13-year-old boy and the oldest a pensioner in his 70s. Today, five people were pulled from the sea at Clacton Pier, Essex, after getting into difficulty - with one person still missing. It comes after five swimmers died on Monday, with the youngest being a 14-year-old boy who got into difficulty in the Thames in Richmond. Brian Sasu, 14, was with pals at Tagg’s Island in Hampton southwest London on Monday afternoon as temperatures reached 37C when he got into difficulty and went missing in the Thames. Top tips for saving water during the heatwave
Water shortages are being reported across the UK and Ireland - with some suppliers warning that they are facing a "critical" situation. People are being urged to conserve water as the heatwave continues. Here are some top tips for using less. :: Fill a jug with water and keep it in the fridge. This gives you quick access to a cool drink, without having to run the tap and wait until the water is sufficiently cold. :: Take a shower. The average bath uses 40 litres more water than a shower. It would also be helpful to cut the time you spend in the shower by a minute. If you really want to have a bath try filling the tub an inch less, saving five litres of water in the process. :: Do not water your lawn so much. Leaving your sprinkler on for an hour can use more water than a family of four would use in a day. If your lawn is turning brown the advice is not to fret, it will recover when it rains again. Tottenham striker and England captain Harry Kane takes on six-hitting challenge at The Hundred
Tottenham and England striker Harry Kane swapped his football boots for a cricket bat as he took part in a six-hitting challenge before a Hundred match at Lord’s. Kane took on Spurs team-mate Matt Doherty in the challenge as the pair tried their best to clear the ropes ahead of London Spirit’s clash with Manchester Originals. Former England captain and Sky Sports pundit Nasser Hussain was on hand to offer technical advice but the pair did not look too out of place at the makeshift crease. Kane and Doherty are both cricket lovers and met London Spirit captain Eoin Morgan and Manchester Originals skipper Jos Buttler before the challenge. Tottenham legend Kane then performed the toss, with Spirit posting 160-6 after electing to bat first. England opener Zak Crawley made 41 and West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard smashed four sixes in his 11-ball 34. Spurs duo Kane and Doherty helped Tottenham kick-start their 2022-23 season with an emphatic 4-1 win over … [Read more...] about Tottenham striker and England captain Harry Kane takes on six-hitting challenge at The Hundred
Poor overpriced food and grubby rooms risk wrecking our reputation with overseas tourists
Amanda Cropp is a senior business journalist with experience covering tourism. OPINION: The $24.50 plate of undercooked poached eggs, with partially thawed slices of frozen avocado and inedible hollandaise really got me going. Having to clean up someone else’s toothpaste spit off the peeling varnish of a vanity unit in a freezing hotel room did not please me much either. Having covered the tourism industry for decades, including the last two years under Covid-19, I am conscious of the pressures operators face, and under the circumstances, I’m prepared to cut them some slack if service is a bit ropey. But there is no excuse for poor overpriced food or under-heated less-than-clean accommodation, and I’m not at all sure overseas visitors who have paid thousands of dollars to fly here will be prepared to wear that if things don’t improve before the tourist season really kicks off in spring. I’m going to sit still and enjoy the silence – and you should join me
Something strange is taking off on social media. Not one of the usual faddish challenges or hashtags gone viral. Not another run of make-up free selfies, or dance crazes that require you to embarrass yourself in the hope of gaining approval. No. The thing that is having a moment is stillness. It is silence. Specifically, the static images and long, thoughtful captions that have made Instagram the mega success it is. Whilst other social media platforms push noisy video over still photos, Instagram has always gone the other way – and for its slightly older users, who love gazing upon beautiful photos of food and gardens in bloom, it’s worked. Sunsets may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but in an increasingly noisy and frenetic online world , the Instagram experience has always seemed like a sea of tranquillity compared with Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and Snapchat. Until recently, when everybody’s Instagram feeds suddenly began featuring videos posted by people they weren’t actually … [Read more...] about I’m going to sit still and enjoy the silence – and you should join me
