READING is the best thing you can do for your children, even from the earliest days. Countless studies have shown how reading can improve everything from vocabulary to early literacy skills a few years later, when they’re ready to head off to school. It also does wonders for their imaginations and can help establish that most important of things when children are very young: routine. Setting a time aside every day can help you connect with your one-year-old, and will start to signify to them that sleep will follow the post-bath snuggle in bed, which always involves a book. Or several. One-year-old children can already be avid readers. Of course, their love of reading often involves exploring the book itself: pawing at it, chewing it, throwing it around - this is why board books are such a hit with the infant crowd. The most popular books for this age range tend to focus on characters they know and recognise (hello, Peppa!), animal figures (this is why The Very Hungry … [Read more...] about Best books for 1 year olds 2019: flap books, personalised books, buggy books and more

Stamp duty holiday to be extended to the end of June saving movers up to £15k in tax in £1bn budget giveaway
RISHI Sunak is preparing to extend the stamp duty holiday by three months until the end of June. The Chancellor is set to delay the cut off point for buyers to save thousands on purchasing homes with the move. The Treasury announced last year that it would temporarily raise the stamp duty threshold from £125,000 to £500,000 for property sales in England and Northern Ireland. But many people have been left scrambling to complete their transactions before the deadline of March 31, worried that if they do not, they could be left with a £15,000 tax bill. The deadline will now likely roll on until the summer. The Times reported that Mr Sunak - who has been urged not to end the stamp duty holiday - will use his Budget next week to move the deadline to the end of June. Extending the stamp duty holiday could cost the Treasury around £1 billion, according to The Times. It will go alongside moves to extend furlough and other support measures such as the VAT cut … [Read more...] about Stamp duty holiday to be extended to the end of June saving movers up to £15k in tax in £1bn budget giveaway
Boris Johnson hints Chancellor Rishi Sunak could slash tax on pints in next week’s Budget
RISHI Sunak could slash tax on pints in next week's budget, Boris Johnson hinted yesterday. The PM was urged by MPs to consider giving pubs a boost by slicing their tax and slapping them on supermarket drinks instead. Brits have flocked to supermarket giants to get their hands on booze throughout the pandemic, but boozers have been closed for several months . The Treasury undertook a review on alcohol duty last year, and is mulling over the findings. Changes to alcohol duty could boost pub sales by 100 million pints a year and stop thousands of pubs closing their doors for good this year, the Social Market Foundation said last week. They urged him to add 14p to a supermarket can and slash 36p off the price of a pint down the pub. At PMQs yesterday the PM said it was "an extremely good point which I'm sure will be heard with great interest around the country".
