BREAKING THIS MORNING: The U.S. confirmed that formal trade talks with Britain will begin in earnest after Brexit Day. In a letter to key Senate politicians made public last night, Donald Trump’s trade envoy Robert Lighthizer said negotiations will begin with Britain “as soon as it is ready after it exits the European Union on March 29, 2019.” The letter calls for an “ambitious trade agreement” to remove “existing goods and services tariff and non-tariff barriers.” Read it in full here. Brexit secretary Dominic Raab today warned a “no deal” Brexit is possible if talks fall through by October even as Prime Minister Theresa May steps up efforts to secure EU backing for her Chequers compromise. Raab said that “any responsible government” would plan for a breakdown in negotiations, even if it is aiming for a trade deal with the EU. May’s ministers will launch a charm offensive on European capitals in an effort to build support for the compromise plan, agreed at the Chequers residence, with the 27 remaining EU member states. Over the weekend the Prime Minister said the government must “step up the pace of negotiations” and warned of a ticking clock.
