A new study aimed at finding the best city in France to work has ranked Nantes as top of the pile for the second consecutive year. Rose Trigg explains why we should pack our bags and head out west. The study by L’Express newspaper ranked Nantes top of the tree for the best place to work out of France's biggest towns and cities apart from Paris. But it's not just the L'Express study that suggests Nantes is thriving. In The Local's own study on the best cities in France to live for foreigners, Nantes was ranked second, above Paris (5th) and was only beaten by its close neighbour Rennes. So why is Nantes the place to be right now? The president of the city's Chamber of Commerce and Industry previously spelled it out for The Local. “It’s got a privileged location in the heart of the “Great West” region,” said Yann Trichard. But it’s also not far from Paris, has a balanced economy and powerful industrial base, he added. He also … [Read more...] about Why the best place to work in France right now is… Nantes

Tell us if you agree with our own poll The City of London from Hampstead Heath Two neighbourhoods, both alike in dignity. In fair Camden where we lay our scene. From ancient grudge break to new mutiny. Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. Or at least that’s what the Sunday Times would have us believe. In their ‘Best places to live 2017’ list the paper pitted the two halves of our namesake, Hampstead and Highgate, against one another. Highgate made the cut and was included as number 13 on the list of ‘old favourites’. It was described as “a much better place to live [than Hampstead]” by virtue of being cheaper and less overrun by tourists, whilst still being close to the … [Read more...] about Ham OR High: which is the best place to live?

Hampstead is one of the few prime residential locations where the lights are still on It comes as even less of a surprise that Hampstead was one of the areas marked out by the definitive nationwide list, which has been published annually since 2013. As one of the few prime London areas where the lights are still on – despite a significant amount of overseas buyers, the area still boasts comparatively high rates of owner occupation – Hampstead stands apart from similarly priced “trophy neighbourhoods” like Mayfair, which was bumped this year due to high levels of absentee ‘residents’. Hampstead Heath is the biggest attraction of … [Read more...] about Hampstead and Kentish Town chosen as best places to live in London
BOURNEMOUTH and Poole are among the best places in the country to pass a driving test, figures suggest. The data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) shows that 55 per cent of all learners in Bournemouth and 56 per cent in Poole passed their practical test between April and September 2017. The average pass rate for test centres across Great Britain was 47 per cent, with fewer than a third of new drivers at Erith, in south east London, successfully getting their licences - the toughest centre in the country. Overall built up urban areas tend to have lower pass rates, while at potentially quieter rural test centres learners appear to find the exam easier. Golspie in the Scottish Highlands has the highest pass rate of 79 per cent. The Bournemouth centre conducted 3,861 tests over the six months and 2,132 people passed. The Poole centre conducted 1,885 tests over the six months and 1,048 people passed.
