She also worried constantly about where to park overnight, since she was living in her car. "That journey was a little traumatic for me,'' says Johnson, who lived in her 2014 Chrysler 200 from September 2016 until the following March. "It affected my grades a lot. It affected my mental health. It affected my emotional stability. I was having different doubts about my future.'' Johnson's plight is more common than many may realize. A survey of nearly 86,000 students taken last fall by The Hope Center for College, Community and Justice found that homelessness affected 18% of respondents attending two-year colleges, and 14% of those attending four-year institutions. Students from Bradford College checked in to a Brighouse hotel for a week - but it was no vacation. Instead, the students, from Travel and Tourism and Catering and Hospitality courses, gained valuable work experience by working alongside staff in a variety of roles before taking over the running of the Holiday Inn in Clifton themselves. It was the second year in a row that the large hotel, just off junction 25 of the M62 motorway, hosted students to give them a real-world work placement that enabled them to put their classroom learning into practice.The students covered a variety of roles including reception, catering, maintenance, events and management. The average cost of car insurance for a 17 year old has hit £1,964 - and that means new motorists are doing everything they can to afford to stay on the road.
