CAR giant Jaguar Land Rover is expected to announce today that it will be culling up to 5,000 jobs, as demand for diesel cars falls. The luxury carmaker employs 44,000 workers in the UK at sites in Halewood on Merseyside and Solihull, Castle Bromwich and Wolverhampton in the West Midlands. Jobs affected will be mainly in management, marketing and administrative roles, the BBC reported. In October last year the car giant unveiled a £2.5 billion turnaround plan that included cost cutting after Brexit uncertainty and slowing demand in China left it nursing a hefty second-quarter loss. The firm's figures were also affected by the introduction of European emissions standards known as WLTP, which resulted in a fall in demand for diesel cars. In China, demand weakened following a number of import duty changes and escalating trade tensions with the US. There’s no doubt that 2018 has been a tough year for Jaguar Land Rover - but 2019 is set to be even tougher. Wind the clock back a year and the situation couldn’t have been more different to the storm clouds gathering right now. A year ago the Coventry car maker was still growing, turning over a handsome profit and talking about all sorts of exciting plans for the future - electrification, new models, a new factory in Slovakia and much more besides. Following on from its sale by Ford and good stewardship by owners Tata, Jaguar Land Rover really seemed to have the Midas touch. It was a great news story - not just for the 40,000 people employed by the car maker in the UK - but for the many tens of thousands more working in the automotive supply chain. Quite some time back Jaguar Land Rover’s UK boss Jeremy Hicks reckoned that Jaguar Land Rover supported around 100,000 jobs in the UK - that figure was probably a conservative estimate even then and there’s no … [Read more...] about What does 2019 hold for Jaguar Land Rover?
Land Rover has confirmed that its new long-awaited next-generation Defender model will be fully revealed during 2019 with first customer deliveries from 2020. Available in short- and long-wheelbase versions, prices are expected to start from around £40,000 - but there's a good chance it won't be built in the UK. Two names come to mind immediately – Land Rover and Land Cruiser. The former was best embodied in the Defender, which went out of production in 2016 after decades – and had morphed largely into a pricey and fashionable status symbol. But the Defender had a loyal following among those who used it for its intended purpose – off-roading, load-lugging and general dirty work. It’s to these people that the new Toyota Land Cruiser Utility should appeal – people who don’t care about fashion, but really need a car to perform flawlessly in the rough stuff for years at a time. What’s new? Utility trim is new for 2018 and all about ‘less is more’ – even more so in the Commercial variant we tested, which ditches the rear seats … [Read more...] about Review: The Toyota Land Cruiser Utility brings the rugged skill of the Land Rover Defender into the 21st century
Jaguar Land Rover is set to cut thousands of jobs as part of a £2.5bn cost-cutting drive as it battles falling sales of diesel cars, weak demand in China and Brexit uncertainty. Up to 5,000 staff could be made redundant in the new year - one in eight of JLR’s workforce - the Financial Times reported. A JLR spokesperson would not confirm details of the reported plans. The British carmaker cut 1,000 agency staff at its Solihull plant earlier this year and a further 1,000 permanent employees are working a three-day week until Christmas as production is scaled down.
