Revealed: how much ‘electric households’ are saving on bills
Households with fossil fuel cars and gas boilers are shelling out £1,180 more on their annual bills compared with their electric counterparts, according to new analysis shared exclusively with Sky News. Amid high inflation, the saving for homes with electric cars, heat pumps and an energy efficiency band C rating - the government target level - has almost doubled from £620 a year ago, research by think tank Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) has found. The number is set to to jump further still to £1,600 in October. "The question of upfront costs can be significant," acknowledged Dr Simon Cran-McGreehin, ECIU's head of analysis. That is why, as low-income households particularly struggle with bills amid a cost of living crisis , "government support to help them get over that hurdle is increasingly important", he argued. Small businesses are hit with back rent demands amid high inflation
The rent has come due for America's small businesses and at a very inopportune time. Landlords were lenient about rent payments during the first two years of the pandemic. Now, many are asking for back rent, and some are raising the current rent as well. Meanwhile, most of the government aid programs that helped small businesses get through the pandemic have ended while inflation has sharply pushed up the cost of supplies, shipping, and labor. Martin Garcia, owner of gift and décor store Gramercy Gift Gallery in San Antonio, Texas, survived the first part of the pandemic in part by paying his landlord whatever rent he could each month. Then in August 2021, after the federal moratorium on evictions ended, his landlord asked for the full amount of back rent that he owed. "I needed $10,000 in 15 days," Garcia said. He took whatever loans he could find – often at high interest rates – and barely met the deadline. A strong holiday season helped him pay back his loans, but so far … [Read more...] about Small businesses are hit with back rent demands amid high inflation
Covid: BA4 and BA5 symptoms, infection rate, and vaccine efficiency
Covid-19 case numbers are rising again, in part due to two Omicron subvariants – BA4 and BA5. These mutations, first found in South Africa in January and February 2022, were labelled as ‘variants of conern’ by the European Centre for Disease Prevention (ECDC) and Control in mid-May. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is now advising people to ensure they’ve had all their Covid-19 jabs , while experts are calling for a new, Omicron-specific vaccine to tackle another wave of the virus . Here’s what you need to know about BA4 and BA5. What are the symptoms of the BA4 and BA5 Covid variants? While these are new subvariants, nothing so far suggests BA4 or BA5 have any new symptoms. As always, the NHS says symptoms to watch out for are: A high temperature A new, continuous cough Shortness of breath Tiredness or exhaustion Headache Muscle aches all over the body Sore throat Blocked or runny nose Diarrhoea Nausea or vomiting A lack of … [Read more...] about Covid: BA4 and BA5 symptoms, infection rate, and vaccine efficiency
You’ve been applying suncream wrong – doctor shares best way to do it
Temperatures are set to skyrocket this week as a heatwave blasts the UK. Today, Britain could bask in temperatures as high as 34 degrees Celsius. Britain should bake in hot weather for around 48 hours – meaning the perfect sunny weekend. Finally, some good news for sun-seeking Brits who aren’t willing to risk travelling abroad. While we’ll all be enjoying ourselves at back garden barbecues and pub beer gardens, there’s one thing which won’t thank us for the sun exposure. Our skin. NHS statistics reveal that 147,000 new cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are diagnosed each year. And, around 16,000 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed annually – it’s the fifth most common cancer in the UK. Since the 1990s, there has been a terrifying 70% increase in skin cancer rates for people aged between 25 and 49. These numbers point to a lack of diligence when it comes to protecting our skin from harmful UV radiation. In other words, we’re applying our suncream wrong. … [Read more...] about You’ve been applying suncream wrong – doctor shares best way to do it
Britain is becoming Europe’s sick man again and needs stronger medicine now
We can only hope that, one day soon, Andrew Bailey will wake up and realise he is the Governor of the Bank of England . Yet based on his most recent remarks at the European Central Bank conference in Portugal this week, it’s still not clear Bailey is aware of the critical role he plays in shaping UK monetary policy. “The key thing for us is to bring inflation back down to target,” he announced to a room full of bankers. Yes, this is quite the “key”. In fact we’ve been desperate for the Bank to tackle inflation for many months now, so it’s refreshing to know this is an acknowledged priority. “That is what we will do,” Bailey pronounced in his follow up. Again, good news. How? When? Is there any plan of action, apart from the Bank’s governor talking about the UK economy as if the role he plays is a minor one, at best? If there’s any generous reading to be done of Bailey’s remarks, it was the not-so-subtle indication that the Bank is considering a 50 basis points jump in … [Read more...] about Britain is becoming Europe’s sick man again and needs stronger medicine now

There’s still money to be made in the stock market – here’s why
Interest rates are still rising. A sharp recession is looming. Supply chains are still chaotic, the war in Ukraine is dragging on and on, and inflation shows no sign of coming under control. It is hardly surprising that stocks are getting hammered . With the sole exception of the FTSE, which has done so badly over the last 20 years it could hardly do any worse, the first half of the 2022 has been one of the most brutal for investors on record – and in the case of the Nasdaq, actually the worst half year ever. From here on, things can only get better. In fact the historical record shows that terrible first halves to the year are typically followed by a strong bounce back in the six months that follow. If inflation starts to ease , if employment stays robust even as real wages fall, and if the war comes to a quicker than expected end, that should be the story of 2022 as well. It is unlikely to be a great year but a lot of the losses of the last six months could be quickly … [Read more...] about There’s still money to be made in the stock market – here’s why
