Once in a century someone ordinary comes along with the grit and guts to rise to the superhuman challenge of extraordinary times. Such a man was Captain Sir Tom Moore, who made it to his 100th birthday – despite setting himself an ambitious task that would have floored some people half his age. He only intended to raise £1,000 for the NHS by doing 100 laps of his garden with his walking frame. No one was more gobsmacked than him when donations hit nearly £40million. In doing so, he both inspired and humbled a nation staring a foreign invader in the eye and fearing defeat. If Tom could square up to this enemy with such steely courage and punch it on the snout, then so could the rest of us. And it should be no irony that it was Covid-19 that eventually got him. The Second World War veteran passed away on February 2, suffering from pneumonia and having been diagnosed with coronavirus. Many of our greatest warriors are honoured only posthumously thanks to their heroism. His … [Read more...] about ‘Captain Tom rose to superhuman challenge of extraordinary times – he was the best of us’

Can a trans woman, simply by being a transgender woman, be a threat to cisgender women [people whose gender identity matches their sex assigned at birth — Editor's note]? In more and more countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Spain, a sector within the feminist movement seems to think so. Just like far-right religious conservatives , self-proclaimed "radical feminists" — also known as trans-exclusionary radical feminists, or TERFs — claim gender does not exist. For them, only "biological sex" does. In their opinion, allowing trans women into single-sex spaces would endanger cisgender women. Many of them also believe that legally recognizing gender self-determination, a legal gender change without a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria, would allow rapists to escape punishment. Veterans Andy McNab and John Nichol reveal horrors of Gulf War torture including having teeth pulled out with pliers
IT only takes an exploding firework or slammed car door to drag former airman John Nichol back three decades to the bombs peppering Baghdad. A haunting reminder of dark nights when, shivering in a Iraqi cell, the waves of allied warplanes unleashed an incendiary storm that seemed to creep ever closer. By rights it should have been Nichol carrying out sorties over Saddam Hussein’ s Iraq as Gulf War One raged. Instead, he was cowering in a cell after being shot from the skies and paraded on world’s TV screens for Geneva Convention-denying propaganda. Battered and bruised pictures of the RAF navigator and his pilot John Peters became the defining images of the 1991 conflict, immortalised in The Sun’s front page splash headlined "Bastards of Baghdad". Today, 30 years since the war officially ended, the dad-of-one and best selling author reveals: “Being paraded on TV was the worst moment of my life. “A moment I still think of with shame and regret. I felt I was … [Read more...] about Veterans Andy McNab and John Nichol reveal horrors of Gulf War torture including having teeth pulled out with pliers
