Italy’s populist government and producers of Parmesan cheese and Parma have warned that the World Health Organisation attempting to blacklist iconic Italian foods like Parma ham and Parmeson as part of a boradening United Nations campaign against fatty and salty foods. The proposals mooted in a recent WHO report Time to deliver are to be discussed at a UN meeting in New York in September to evaluate progress in the battle against heart disease, hypertension, cancer and diabetes. The report did not mention any specific food products by name but the respected Italian business newspaper Sole 24 Ore set off a furore by reporting the UN agency could target Parmesan cheese and ham from Parma as well as pizza, wine and even extra-virgin olive oil. The Italian agriculture minister, Gian Marco Centinaio, described the prospect of Italian foods being blacklisted as “pure madness". Archant The former manager of a food store has been given a suspended jail sentence after admitting selling out of date meat and cheese, some of which was mouldy. Ferhat Aras, 36, was prosecuted by Fenland District Council after he failed to improve food safety standards at Baltic International Food in Hill Street, Wisbech, following inspections by environmental health officers. Aras, of Granby Street, Littleport, a director of the company, pleaded guilty to eight food safety and hygiene offences and was sentenced at Peterborough Crown Court. Aras used to run a store in Littleport before moving his business to Wisbech in around 2016 when he was granted a licence to sell alcohol despite fierce objections from the police and trading standards.
