Over the last few days we have learned that Sir Nick Clegg, the president of global affairs at Meta, is moving back from America to the British capital. Alongside him will be the head of Instagram Adam Mosseri and very soon the head of marketing Alex Schultz as well. At this rate, it might just be simpler to move the whole company over to this side of the Atlantic. When they get here, they certainly won’t be short of internet-savvy neighbours. Alphabet, Apple, and Bloomberg, effectively a tech company dressed up as a media business, are all massively expanding their operations in London. Ironically, while the capital may have voted massively against our departure from the European Union, and staged every kind of demonstration against Brexit imaginable, it doesn’t seem to have stopped London from cementing its position as Europe’s key technology hub. It is racing ahead. And yet in truth, the city needs to turbo-charge its tech ambitions. If we finally get rid of the … [Read more...] about London must power up its post-Brexit tech boom

Author Patricia Nicol reveals a selection of the best books on: Holiday jobs
Do young people still do holiday and weekend jobs? I first went to work, at 15, as ‘a sweets girl’, making puddings such as knickerbocker glories, at a restaurant. My intention had been to save up to go Interrailing, but on a starting salary that I recall as £1.13, raised to £1.76 an hour, I was barely going to be able to reach the next town. Later, I had better-paid Saturday shop jobs, and would do (badly) silver service waitressing gigs. My university holiday jobs included waitressing, bar work, switchboard operating, teaching English as a foreign language to Italian and Greek schoolchildren. And, most bizarrely, dental nursing. British author Patricia Nicol has rounded up a selection of the best books on holiday jobs including Factory Girls by Michelle Gallen and The Summer Job by Lizzy Dent I learned a good deal from these jobs: that education is not the same as intelligence; that, in any workplace, there will always be some kind people determined … [Read more...] about Author Patricia Nicol reveals a selection of the best books on: Holiday jobs
Drivers risk £1,000 fines for cleaning car during UK hosepipe ban
A hosepipe ban has been called for parts of the UK. South East Water announced it "had no choice" after the driest July on record, in which the UK experienced its hottest day ever. The measures will come into force on August 12 and could impact at least one million people. READ MORE: Huge law change coming into effect today sparks urgent warning to Brit motorists Water companies called the hosepipe ban to be imposed on people across Kent and Sussex. Because of this, drivers are warned to do regular activities which may lead to fines, including cleaning the car. People won't be allowed to use a hosepipe to clean their vehicles as they risk fines of up to £1,000. To keep their cars looking at their best, drivers can do a number of things to prevent them from being fined. Firstly, motorists could use a bucket of grey water and a sponge to clean their car. A hosepipe uses between 400 and 480 litres of water when washing a car from start to finish. Drivers can … [Read more...] about Drivers risk £1,000 fines for cleaning car during UK hosepipe ban
Older cars and diesels to be hit with new super-charge to enter London – and it might not stop there
In an effort to clean up Britain's air, new plans could see older cars and more polluting vehicles charged far more to drive in the capital – and they might not stop there London mayor Sadiq Khan plans to charge the most polluting vehicles £10 a day to enter the centre of London next year and extend an "ultra low emissions zone" to cover more of London. On the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Clean Air Act, which cut coal pollution in the wake of 1952's killer "Big Smog" in London, Khan joined calls made by environmental lawyers ClientEarth to bring in new air pollution legislation for the 21st century. And liberal conservative think-tank Bright Blue has called for all city councils in England to have the power to establish low emission zones. Beyond London London pollution killed thousands a year before the Clean Air Act cam in The new Clean Air Act proposed by the environmental lawyers would include a national framework for effective "clean air zones", require authorities … [Read more...] about Older cars and diesels to be hit with new super-charge to enter London – and it might not stop there
‘He’s your best player’ – Kevin Pietersen urges England not to drop Jason Roy after latest Hundred failure
Kevin Pietersen has backed Jason Roy to rediscover his form and urged England not to drop the struggling opener, calling him the team’s ‘best player’. Roy, who starred in England’s 2019 World Cup win, has endured a poor summer, scoring 197 runs across 11 international innings. The 32-year-old has also made a subdued start to The Hundred, scoring ten runs in two games and falling for a first-ball duck in Oval Invincibles’ opening fixture against London Spirit. However, despite his lean run of form, Roy has received public support from England legend Pietersen, who says he should keep his place in the team for the T20 World Cup later in the year. ‘Jason is 32 and what I’m sick and tired of in this country is people getting written off at such a young age,’ Pietersen told Sky Sports. ‘Jason is a World Cup winner, he’s done an unbelievable job for Eoin Morgan [England’s former white-ball captain]. He was told by Eoin, like the whole team, to go and smack the ball. … [Read more...] about ‘He’s your best player’ – Kevin Pietersen urges England not to drop Jason Roy after latest Hundred failure

Road becomes fast-flowing river after main bursts wasting huge amount of water
Roads have been brought to a standstill in north London after a major water main burst. Flooding up to four-foot deep hit Islington this morning after a pipe sprung a leak under Hornsey Road. Firefighters used a small dinghy to help families across the flooded street and were pictured carrying children through the water. It comes amid warnings about water shortages across the capital and south of England. A handful of water companies have already imposed hosepipe bans and more are expected to follow suit. The government has urged water firms to take action ahead of a heatwave forecast for the week ahead . The flood will add to the strain on water resources already at alarmingly low levels following weeks of extremely dry weather in the south east. London Fire Brigade said 60 firefighters were sent to deal with the incident. They confirmed a 36-inch water main burst, with flooding primarily impacting Hornsey Road and Tollington Road. People are being asked … [Read more...] about Road becomes fast-flowing river after main bursts wasting huge amount of water
BA extends sales ban on Heathrow short-haul tickets
Published 6 days ago comments Comments Share close Share page Copy link About sharing British Airways has suspended ticket sales for short-haul flights from Heathrow Airport for a further week until 15 August. On Monday, the airline said it had stopped selling the tickets until 8 August, but now it has gone a step further. The move is due to the cap on daily passenger numbers that the UK's biggest airport has imposed over the summer. The suspension will affect BA's flights to domestic and European destinations. Thousands of air travellers have been hit by disruption in recent months, including last-minute cancellations, which have been caused largely by staff shortages. Airports and airlines, which cut jobs during Covid lockdowns, have found it difficult to recruit enough staff as demand for holidays has returned. Heathrow Airport has struggled to cope … [Read more...] about BA extends sales ban on Heathrow short-haul tickets
