Sometimes it’s the small disappointments in everyday life that leave you brooding on the big stuff, writes Pam Pearce. I was rocked by the sudden closure of three small, well-established and much-loved Nottingham grocery shops - Baileys Fruit Market on Mapperley Top, the Salad Bowl in West Bridgford and Thomas’s in Ruddington - all within the space of a few months. Or rather, their demise seemed sudden to me. Perhaps that’s because I was in Thomas’s for my regular Saturday shop just after the wonderful, warm staff got the bad news this was to be their last day. The usual bustle – a real feature and pleasure of village life – was replaced with sadness and sobs; there were tears and hugs, amid the pears and eggs.
