At the end of his Tory leadership campaign launch on Wednesday, Boris Johnson took questions from the press for the first time in more than a year – at only his second major public appearance of 2019. Johnson has been criticised for avoiding public scrutiny and has appeared reluctant to take part in debates with other leadership contenders, prompting one of his rivals, Matt Hancock, to say: “I certainly think that everybody who puts their name forward to be prime minister should be open to scrutiny, should be accountable.” At his launch Johnson agreed to take six questions from journalists. At least one was jeered by the assembled audience when asking her question, and critics who followed the event accused Johnson of failing to engage with the substance of the questions put to him. Here are some excerpts from the press conference. Question: Mr Johnson, you suggested that Brexit would be a straightforward win-win, and actually it’s been a chaotic mess. After weeks of keeping a low profile – a submarine campaign according to critics – with just one newspaper interview, the leadership frontrunner Boris Johnson emerged this morning to officially kickstart his campaign. However, rather than opt for a circus tent, waffle freebies and thinly-veiled attacks at colleagues like some of his rivals, Johnson’s event at Carlton Gardens proved rather tame. The former mayor of London was introduced by a new Cabinet supporter – Geoffrey Cox. Part of a carefully choreographed strategy to show Johnson has support from across the party, Cox took to the lectern (as he did for Theresa May at the last party conference) to explain why he thought Johnson was the best person to lead the country. Given that one rival leadership campaign this week believed Cox … [Read more...] about Boring Boris? Johnson opts for risk-averse campaign launch
Hundreds of residents have backed a petition to save a Solihull social club and playing fields under threat of development. By lunchtime today (Thursday) 1,512 people had put their names to an online appeal set up in support of the much-loved Land Rover Sports and Social Club. The Change.org petition had been launched a week on from news that Jaguar Land Rover is planning to use the land neighbouring its factory to create a new car park. The petition argues that the venue was set-up by employees of the car giant as "a meeting place" and that "hundreds" of people made use of the facilities each week. It went on: "This is the only open green space on the Damsonwood estate and is used every day by the residents. "Years ago another application was rejected for housing under the terms this was an open green space. Let’s keep it that way!" In the few days since it went live, huge numbers of residents have thrown their weight behind the campaign. Many were concerned that locals … [Read more...] about Campaigners launch fight to save Land Rover social club

It pointed to an increase of 82.1 percent compared to 2,043 units sold in the same month a year earlier. On the other hand, property sales in the first four months have hit 13,338, an 82 percent year-on-year increase, up from 7,341 units sold in the same period in 2018. Istanbul continues to be the favorite spot for foreign buyers, who have bought 1,839 houses in the country's most populous city in April. The same figure stood at some 676 units in the same month of last … [Read more...] about Ever-increasing house sales to foreigners see best April
