Struggling mum asks Aldi cashier to stop scanning items but kind stranger pays instead
A struggling mum left completely overwhelmed in Aldi after a stranger paid for the last of her shopping. The situation happened when Francesca Jay was shopping at Aldi on New Bridge Lane in Stockport last week. She said she knew in advance she could only afford to spend £50 on groceries for her and her two children - seven-year-old Sophie and four-year-old William. READ MORE: 'I cleared Aldi shelf after spotting 50p bargains - I don't care if people moan' When she went into the store she shopped as usual, as her total never usually reaches £50. However, as the items were going through on the conveyor belt and the total kept creeping up, meaning Francesca had to ask the cashier to stop scanning her items. This resulted in her having to leave some vegetables, bread, and frozen ice lollies meant as a treat for her kids on the conveyor belt. However, as Francesca apologised and asked the cashier to have the items put back, a kind woman stepped in and offered to … [Read more...] about Struggling mum asks Aldi cashier to stop scanning items but kind stranger pays instead
Gambling firms who ‘get away with literal murder’ must be stopped, says Iain Duncan Smith
The government must stop gambling companies who "get away with literal murder" by introducing a levy to pay for addiction treatment, says Sir Iain Duncan Smith. The former Conservative leader says the industry is "completely unregulated" and many firms ignore the voluntary levy scheme that is already in place - despite the "astonishing amounts" of money they make. "Gambling can lead to fraud, debts, family break-up and eventually suicide," he told Sky News. "There needs to be a predictable source of money going forward for treatment." But Sir Iain warned plans to improve gambling laws were "stuck in government" because of senior members of his party opposing further regulations on businesses, as well as the Treasury. Politics Hub: Ambiguous answer from PM on snap election question Advertisement "I don't need to take lectures from them," said the senior backbencher. "This levy is peanuts. And it is about something that is doing harm . "There … [Read more...] about Gambling firms who ‘get away with literal murder’ must be stopped, says Iain Duncan Smith

Shoppers fuming at Waitrose scone ‘blunder’- with controversial pic on advert
Scone purists were left fuming after spotting an advert for the delicious treat at a local Waitrose but made in the 'wrong' way . The offending advert was seen at the Truro branch in the heart of Cornwall, a region which takes its scones fairly seriously. In the picture the scone was made with the cream first, a cardinal sin for the Cornish where traditionally jam goes on first. Waitrose were quick to take the criticism on board though and committed to donate cream teas from the store to local foodbanks over the jubilee weekend as an apology . It was shopper Barry West, from St Austell, who noticed the store had got into a jam, posting a photo of of the £3.75 cream tea - featuring a scone with clotted cream and preserve with a hot drink - on a couple of Facebook groups. A number of unhappy shoppers shared the blunder online ( Image: Barry West / CornwallLive) He wrote: "Waitrose Truro in Cornwall totally blown it. Not just squirty cream but also the … [Read more...] about Shoppers fuming at Waitrose scone ‘blunder’- with controversial pic on advert
Ben & Jerry’s attacks Unilever for forcing end to its Israel boycott
Ben & Jerry’s has hit back at its owner Unilever for forcibly ending its boycott of Israel , saying selling its ice cream in occupied Palestinian territories remains "inconsistent" with its values. Unilever overruled Ben & Jerry’s independent board on Wednesday by selling the division’s Israeli operations to its franchise partner in the country. The move came after the ice cream brand stopped sales of its product in occupied Palestinian territories in a political protest. Writing on Twitter, Ben & Jerry's said: We continue to believe it is inconsistent with Ben & Jerry's values for our ice cream to be sold in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. — Ben & Jerry's (@benandjerrys) June 29, 2022 The company said the sale means Ben & Jerry’s will no longer profit from its ice cream in Israel. Unilever yesterday slapped down Ben & Jerry's stance on selling in the region, saying it "rejects completely and repudiates unequivocally any form of … [Read more...] about Ben & Jerry’s attacks Unilever for forcing end to its Israel boycott
Ben & Jerry’s gives UK parent firm the cold shoulder in Israel sale spat
Ben & Jerry's has lashed out at its UK parent firm after it sold its ice cream business in Israel in a bid to avert a diplomatic row over the US brand's decision to exit Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories. Unilever revealed on Wednesday that it had sold off Ben & Jerry's to its Israel licensee for an undisclosed sum. It followed the US ice cream business's decision, last year, to stop marketing products in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories on the grounds that sales would be "inconsistent" with its values. Under the new arrangement, Ben & Jerry's ice cream will be available to all consumers in Israel and the occupied West Bank. Israel's foreign ministry called the Ben & Jerry's deal "a huge victory". Advertisement "We will fight delegitimisation and the BDS campaign in every arena, whether in the public square, in the economic sphere or in the moral realm," Israel's Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said in a statement. … [Read more...] about Ben & Jerry’s gives UK parent firm the cold shoulder in Israel sale spat
Serving up proper Pacific Island food, once a week, from a garage in Blenheim
Brya Ingram Samoan mother-of-six Tereise Maefia is putting her children through school by giving seasonal workers a taste of home. When Tereise Maefia thought about starting her own business last year, she saw a gap in the market that she thought just had to be filled. With thousands of Pacific Islanders living in Marlborough, working under the Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme, for months – sometimes years – on end, surely they had to have a hankering for a traditional home-cooked meal. And, being Samoan, and a mother-of-six, Maefia knew only too well how to cook Pacific Island cuisine –and plenty of it. “I started in my kitchen with one pot, and my first day was a sell-out. I just advertised on my Facebook page and sold over a hundred meals on my first day,” Maefia said. Ukraine risks losing Russia war without more Western military aid, warns Dutch PM
The Dutch prime minister has said western allies must send more weapons to Ukraine or risk seeing Ukrainian forces lose against Russia - something that would be "very problemsome" for everyone. Mark Rutte also told Sky News that the NATO alliance needs to make good on a range of pledges made at a major summit in Madrid to bolster its own defences. Ukraine news live: Putin warns 'aggressive' sanctions could justify war Asked if the history books would look back at the Madrid summit as the moment when allies failed to respond to the challenge posed by authoritarian Russia , he said: "No it is not the moment when we failed. "But whether this is a success depends on two things: whether we implement all the commitments including all the extra money being necessary… and secondly it is about again the weapon deliveries into Ukraine . Advertisement "This is the short-term thing we need to do. If we don't do that then there is a risk that … [Read more...] about Ukraine risks losing Russia war without more Western military aid, warns Dutch PM
